LADIES SECTION INFORMATION NEWS AND RESULTS

Welcome to Ashbourne Golf Club Ladies section! A friendly welcome awaits any lady who is interested in playing or learning how to play golf. New members whatever their standard, are always welcome and encouraged to join in with other lady members. There are approximately 50 lady members at the club who play golf socially and/or in the competitions. Do not worry if you do not have a handicap. When you are ready they will be happy to score any qualifying cards for you.

Once again, it is hoped to encourage more ladies to take up the game by offering coaching sessions followed at a later date by 9 holes with a lady member. Do contact the Lady Captain (see details below) if you are interested in learning to play.

For those who wish to play in competitions, competition days are normally Thursdays and Sundays. Ladies can, if they wish, play in both the Thursday and Sunday Medals and can compete in other competitions on either day. There are numerous competitions throughout the season as well as additional mixed social competitions on some weekends. Each Wednesday in the summer there is also a mixed 9 hole social competition and 2010 saw our inaugural mixed knock out competition. In 2011 we have our first two mixed club matches against Burton Golf Club and have again entered the ladies' inter club Spondon Trophy knock out competition.

We have a 9 hole standard scratch certificate and handicap conversions, which enables us to hold 9 hole qualifying competitions, including a number Tuesday 9 hole stableford competitions.

Silver and Bronze league matches, The Sunday Mail Cup and Midlands Scratch League are organized for those ladies who enjoy the challenge of match play.

Our Ladies' Captain, Anne Colwell will be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in ‘trying out’ or joining the club. She can be contacted on 01332 361326

LADIES  NEWS  AND  COMPETITION  RESULTS  2012

MAY

On 3 May Ashbourne’s Bronze team recorded its first win a 3-2 victory over Burton B . June Knight playing for the team for the first time and giving 2 shots, putted very well and had an impressive 6 and 5 win. Pat Richardson giving 2 shots had very consistent game in all departments and went one better winning 7 and 6. The third point came from Rachel Jenkinson who won 5 and 3. Lesley Hyde and Pat Simpson had narrow losses, but the team was pleased to secure its first league points of the season.

 APRIL

Ladies Lose to Rushcliffe in Spondon Trophy

In the Spondon Trophy, an interclub competition for senior golfers, Ashbourne drew Rushcliffe Golf Club from Leicestershire in the first round. The home leg was a close affair, with wins from Gill Lockwood, Sandra Maxwell, Pat Richardson and Chrissie Purrett. Sally Benn, Pat Weetman, Margaret Cumming all had very close games, two of which went to the final green. However the 4-3 scoreline was going to be difficult to defend at Rushcliffe and so it proved. Jill Bainbridge stood in for Chrissie Purrett in the Ashbourne team which only managed to secure 1 ½ points with Pat Weetman reversing her loss from the home leg and Pat Richardson taking a hard earned half. Most of the matches were reasonably close but although the Ashbourne players enjoyed playing the delightful Rushcliffe course the Rushcliffe team played very well, making the most of their home advantage and achieving an 8 ½ to 5 ½ win over the two legs.

Spondon Trophy Team at Rushcliffe Golf Club

In the Bronze Division Ashbourne took on Alfreton, away from home. Weather conditions were favourable and the course was in good condition but Ashbourne were beaten 4-1. Chrissie Purrett was the solitary winner 3 & 2,although there were two close results which could have gone Ashbourne’s way, Jean Bissell losing at the last hole and Rachel Jenkinson losing on the 17th hole.

Mary Sessions Trophy

The annual match between the Lady Captain, Anne Colwell’s team and Lady Vice Captain, Anne Weaver’s team, The Mary Sessions Trophy, brought a win for the Vice Captain’s team. In the first game, Anne Weaver and her partner Rachel Robinson beat Anne Colwell and Sandra Maxwell 2up and Gill Lockwood and Jean Bissell beat Margaret Cumming and Alison Westerman to give the Vice Captain’s team an unassailable 2-0 lead. However Pat Richardson and her partner Jill Bainbridge secured a point for the Lady Captain’s team beating Sally Benn and Pat Weetman.

The ladies Silver Team has had a mixed start to the season with a defeat at Erewash and a win at home to Chapel en le Frith. At Erewash Sally Benn and Anne Weaver took a half each to gain Ashbourne's only point. Jill Bainbridge, Sandra Maxwell and Anne Colwell were unable to add to the total resulting in a 4 -1 loss. The score was reversed against Chapel, with wins for Gill Lockwood, Jill Bainbridge, Sally Benn and Sandra Maxwell. Anne Weaver giving 7 shots, struggled against an in form opponent, giving Chapel their single point.

Spring Trophy win for Margaret Cumming

The Ladies Spring Trophy was contested on Sunday 15 April. Scores were close and Margaret Cumming, playing off her handicap of 21 continued her steady start to the season. Having finished runner up two weeks ago in the Inaugural Cup, she went one better to take the Spring Trophy with 34 points. Her back nine score was better than her front nine, 19pts and 15pts respectively, and pars at the 5th 13th and 14th holes as well as consistent putting, contributed to a good all round performance. In second place was Sally Benn playing of off 13 with 33 points. She was pleased to have completed a decent back nine with 17 points having scored 16 on the front nine. She also parred three of the par 3 holes. Lisa Gregory playing off 19 took 3rd place with 32 points.

 Winter League

Gill Lockwood and Margaret Cumming eventually secured the Winter League title after extenuating circumstances led to an extension of the completion date to mid April. They managed to win all six of their matches, the closest being against Sandra Maxwell and Anne Colwell, which they won 2 and 1. Gill and Margaret dovetailed very well as a pair and as a result they performed pretty consistently in most games.

Bronze Team

The Ladies Bronze team had a disappointing start to the season losing at home to Mickleover Golf Club 4 ½ to ½ . Although the games were close with three going to the 17th hole, Eleanor Clark was the player who gained Ashbourne’s solitary half point . The rest of the team was Pat Richardson, Rachel Robinson, Rachel Jenkinson, Susan Treacher.

MARCH

Lady Captain Anne Colwell wins Inaugural Cup in style

Ashbourne’s Ladies Captain Anne Colwell got off to a flying start to the season in the Inaugural Cup on Saturday 31 March. Playing off her handicap of 21 Anne had a reasonable front nine holes amassing 15 points, but came to life on the back nine where she played well under her handicap, parring holes 10 to 13 and hole 17. Anne struck the ball consistently, played beautifully from tee to green and putted very well scoring 24 points, her best ever back nine , totalling 39 points overall. Of particular note was a very tricky put down the bank onto the green at the 13th which hit the pin and dropped in for an unlikely par. Anne was delighted with her performance afterwards and having shaved 1.6 off her handicap has now moved up into the Silver Division, with her new playing handicap of 20. In second place was Margaret Cumming with 34 points and 3rd place Anne Weaver with 33 points. She did not have quite the same luck at the 13th. Having played pretty well up to this point, she played a high lob shot towards the hole, only to see her ball hit the tree guarding the green and rattle down inside it, never to be seen again.

Spring NIne Hole Open Stableford

The annual Spring Open Nine Hole Stableford competition took place in wonderfully warm spring weather on Friday 23 March. There was a good turn out of ladies from a number of Derbyshire and Staffordshire clubs and the course looked in great condition for the time of year.

Scoring was not particularly high with the better scores coming from the bronze division where Barbara Edwards form Matlock G.C. took the honours playing very well to score 21 points. Ashbourne’s, Viv Prince was second on 19 points and in third was Julie Griffiths from The Manor G.C. with 18 pts. In the Silver Division, Ashbourne players shared the prizes. Lisa Gregory played well, even though she thought that she had left a few points out on the course. Despite this, she took first prize with 19 points, closely followed by Sandra Maxwell on 18 points. Sandra had started her 9 holes well had blip in the middle but finished strongly. Third prize was decided on count back on the last three holes and was taken by Ruth Clift who edged out Gill Hartley from the Manor G.C.

Prizewinners - Viv Prince Julie Griffiths Barbara Edwards Anne Colwell Sandra Maxwell and Ruth Clift

Having thanked everyone for their support and organisation Ladies’ Captain Anne Colwell made the presentations. Particular thanks went to Chris Perry, who had done her usual great job of organising and running the competition assisted by Pat Weetman.

JANUARY

Ladies Fall at First Hurdle in Mail on Sunday Competition

Ashbourne Golf Club Ladies’ team unfortunately lost 4 – 1 in their first round match in the Mail on Sunday Inter Club Golf Competition at Breadsall Priory G.C. on 29 January. Both clubs put out strong teams and the course conditions were pretty good despite the recent wet weather. However, at times the ball ran very little on the fairways and approach shots pitching on the soft greens tended stay put on landing, so careful club selection was a key element in every game.

The match was played in excellent spirit, but home advantage proved key and it was not until the final player, Anne Weaver came in that Ashbourne managed a win in a very close game which went to the last green with Anne winning 1 up. Gill Lockwood, giving 2 shots played pretty well, but was out putted by her opponent who scored 2 birdies and a number of pars to win 5 and 3. Kay Jones making her debut for the Ashbourne team, played very well and had a tough game, again giving 2 shots. Her opponent was very consistent and played 2 under her handicap taking the match on the 16th hole, 3 and 2. Sally Benn was hoping to stage a comeback at the 17th after her opponent fluffed her tee shot, but was disappointed to see her own well struck tee shot go in the greenside hazard, resulting in a lost hole and match 3 and 1. Sandra Maxwell played Breadsalls’s top player and fought hard, but her opponent barely put a foot wrong and playing from a handicap of 7, kept Sandra under pressure throughout to take the game 2 and 1. Although disappointed to lose, the match was enjoyed by all members of the Ashbourne team who wished the Breadsall team well in the next round.

 Captains Drive In 2012

A  rather damp and dull New Year's Day saw the annual Drive - In for all the 2012 Ashbourne Captains. There was a good turn out of members and supporters who watched as the Club President Frank McCabe and the new captains took to the first tee. After a few welcoming words from the President Club Captain Peter Flinn was invited to drive off, followed by Ladies' Captain Anne Colwell, Seniors Captain Terry Hunt and the Junior Captains Daniel and Liam Waring.

AUGUST

TOYE TROPHY TRIUMPH FOR ANNE

Anne Weaver had quite a tussle against Kay McClure in the final of the Ladies Match Play Knockout Competition the Toye Trophy. Playing off her handicap of 13 and receiving 4 shots from Kay it was always going to be a tough match. Both players produced great golf, with Anne's putting being particularly consistent. Apart from a couple of holes Anne made very few errors throughout and took advantage of the holes at which she received shots, winning three and halving one of them. She was one up at the half way stage and had to be on her game as Kay came back at her with a superb birdie 4 at the par 5 12th and followed it with another one at the par 4 13th. Anne's reposte was a birdie 2 of her own at the 14th hole.

It remained close but Anne edged 2 holes ahead by the 16th and the match was eventually won on the par 5 17th hole which Kay needed to win for the match to continue to the last hole. However, it was halved with both players parring the hole to give Anne her victory 2 and 1.

Obviously pleased at her success Anne commented 'Both of us played some high class golf, but I took advantage of my shot holes and my putting probably just edged it. It was a great match, which we both enjoyed and I suspect Kay played under her handicap on the day'

LADIES GAIN PROMOTION IN THE MIDLANDS INTER COUNTY SCRATCH LEAGUE BUT ARE KNOCKED OUT IN COUNTY SILVER TROPHY SEMIFINAL PLAY-OFFS

The Ladies’ Scratch Team has secured promotion into the Division 6 of the Midland Ladies’Inter County Scratch League after a resounding 5 – 0 home victory over Burghill Valley Golf Club from Herefordshire. Having won all 4 of its matches the team has now gained promotion in only its second year in this league. Against Burghill Valley, Gill Lockwood came in first with an excellent 6 and 5 win followed by Sally Benn who won 3 and 2. Jill Bainbridge and Anne Weaver’s matches were very close. Both secured victory on the 18th hole then Ruth Clift, having been 6 shots up at one stage, completed the team’s victory when she stemmed her opponent’s fight back to win her match 4 and 3.

It has been an impressive performance over the season especially winning the away matches on unfamiliar courses at Fulford and Walmley. Pictured is the team that beat Burghill Valley but Sandra Maxwell, Anne Bourne and Pat Weetman have also been members of the squad and have played a vital part in the Scratch Team’s success this season.

Having won its division, Ashbourne Ladies’ Trophy Team was disappointed to lose the semi- final of the County Silver Trophy play-offs against Breadsall Priory at Kedleston Golf Club on 8th August. Breadsall fielded a strong side but the final result was close with Jill Bainbridge and Sandra Maxwell the two players to win their matches in a 3-2 loss and Sandra having to play an extra hole to secure her victory.

SUN SHINES ON LADIES' AWAY DAY AT LONGCLIFFE GOLF CLUB LOUGHBOROUGH

The ladies' away day took place at at Longcliffe Golf Club on Friday 5 August. After bacon sandwiches to start the day, the ladies started out for their stableford competition. The course was very dry and proved to be a challenge with a number of holes having dog legs and requiring careful club selection. The greens were also quite tricky to read. However the weather was kind and the ladies enjoyed warm sunny playing conditions and some lovely views. Following the day's play the ladies sat down to an excellent meal before the presentation of prizes. Winner of the Bronze Division was Linda Munn on 34 points with Pat Richardson Runner - up and winner of the Silver Division was Lisa Gregory on 36 points with Ruth Clift Runner-up.  Nearest the pin at the 15th was won by Jean Tittterington, straightest drive by Lisa Gregory and nearest the pin with the second shot on the 18th by June Knight. JULY

LADY CAPTAIN’S DAY 17 JULY

WEATHER FAILS TO DAMPEN LADIES' SPIRITS

Ashbourne Ladies’ section turned out in force in somewhat inclement and at times appalling weather conditions to support Lady Captain Jean Bissell. The day started with two Junior competitions for which there were 12 entries, the Junior Trophy for young players with handicaps of 29 -54 and the Junior Shield for players with handicaps 28 and below.

The main event of the day was the ladies’ individual stableford competition and despite the damp conditions there were some good scores. Newcomer Kay McLure who has only been a member of the club for three months and plays of a handicap of 9, won the Silver Division and Lady Captain’s prize with an excellent 38 points, reducing her handicap to 8.5 in the process. Her approach play onto the greens was consistent and she putted very well throughout, achieving numerous pars and an excellent birdie 2 at the 14th hole.

Jean Bissell and Kay McLure

In second place was one of her playing partners, Lisa Gregory who had a flying start with two 4 pointers, parring the second and birdying the 3rd hole. She finished the front nine with 19 points, but was less consistent on the back nine, scoring 16 points for a creditable total of 35. In 3rd place was Sandra Maxwell with 33 points.

In the Bronze Division Anne Colwell off her 22 handicap continued her improvement of recent weeks achieving five pars which earned her 3 points each and a 5 on the 12th for 4 points. She also scored an excellent total of 38 points. Second place was decided on count back with Rachel Robinson just pushing June Knight into third place. Both scored 35 points.

Nearest the pin at the 5th was won by Sally Benn and the straightest drive by Margaret Cumming. The prize for the best aggregate score from holes 3, 10 and 17 was won by Alison Westerman with 10 points.

As the weather closed in, the ladies and their male partners braved the atrocious conditions for the nine hole Wyn Roome Trophy a mixed greensome competition. This was won by Jill Bainbridge and Bernard Weetman who scored a very good 21 points with runners-up Ruth Clift and Mark Wright scoring 20 points. Peter Cliffe won nearest the pin at the 6th hole.

Lady Captain Jean Bissell had clearly enjoyed her special day despite the weather and thanked all those who had been involved in making the day such a success. To conclude the proceedings she was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Vice Captain Anne Colwell.

12th  hole the only blemish on an otherwise low scoring card which gave her a score of +4, just ahead of Jean Bissell in the runners - up spot with +2.  Sandra's driving and approach play to the greens was very consistent and this combined with some accurate putting contributed to her low score, which incuded two birdies. She also reduced her handicap by one to 15.
