Greensome
Win For Wild Brother's
On the Weekend of October 20th/21st the final pairs event
of the season was held in the form of the Autumn Greensomes. The competition
where both player's tee off and the best drive is then played by the
other player's team mate on an alternative basis until the ball is holed
produced a good turnout in fantastic late autumn weather. Many pairs
struggled to play to par or better due to the demanding format of the
game but winners by just 0.2 of a shot were Mickleover Brother's Mark
and Adam Wild recording a nett score of 64.6. Mark with a handicap of
8 and Adam who plays off 7 received a shot allowance of 7.4 over the
18 holes and it was a fine acheivement by the single figure handicappers.
After recording a 4 over par total of 39 on the front 9 the brother's
then absolutely hacked up the back 9 coming in with a gross 33 which
included back to back birdies at the tough 10th and 11th holes to set
them on their way which included another birdie on the par 4 13th and
with no other dropped shots on the back 9 this left them with a gross
72 just one over par for the round.
Mark said "Our front 9 was not great but after the two successive
birdies on the start of the back 9 then we new we might have a chance
and we both played solid coming home". Runners up were incoming
captain of 2008 Peter Cliffe and Pete Robinson who just missed out by
0.2 of a shot. Peter who plays off 8 and Robbo who plays off 16 also
had a gross 39 on the front 9 with a birdie 4 on the par 5 8th hole
the highlight. The back 9 achieved a score of 37 giving the men a return
of 76 less the 11.2 shots to give a nett 64.8.

Texas Win For Ashbourne Men
The last competition before winter league started was
the highly popular Texas Scramble Competition held on the weekend of
the 27th and 28th October and played in teams of 4 or 3. Players had
to have 3 of their own drives in the round and all players then played
from that spot onwards until the ball was holed. 27 Teams entered with
a team of 4 and it was Ashbourne's Local Men consisting of George Ditchfield
(21), Terry Brown (20), Martin Hellaby (27) and Nick Fearn (27) who
swooped and conquered the competition by scoring the lowest ever texas
scramble score since the course became 18 holes back in 1999. Going
out in a 4 under gross score of 31 which included birdies at holes 3,5,7
and 8 and coming home in a one under gross score of 35, the total gross
of 66 which then had to be lightened by the reduction of 17.5 shots
leaving the men with a sub 50 score of 48.5.
Spokesman for the team was Martin who said "We are all pretty high
handicappers but we really put it together to day and it was a great
knock and the competition suited us down to the ground as we are all
able to hit a good ball on a going day". The team of 4 runners
up came in the form of more local lads with Darren Hooley, Martin Murphy,
Jason Clowes and Lloyd Harrison having a nett 52.8 from their fourball.
Team of 3 winners were Darren Barker (4), Pete Young (9) and Craig Young
(4) who hit a cracking 62 gross off their low handicaps, only receiving
3.3 shots, going out in 30 and coming home in 32 it was certainly a
great score for a nett 58.7. Runners up were Neil Mowatt, Paul Smith
and Ron Hill with a nett 59.5.

Glover
Wins Champions Trophy
The Culmination of the golfing season came
to a head on Sunday 14th October when the Champion of Champions Trophy
was staged at Ashbourne Golf Club. Member's had to qualify by either
winning their division of the monthly medals or winning a trophy or
cup outright to earn the status to play. Overall 33 members took part
in the competition with conditions not really suiting the golfer in
weather that can only be described as gloomy, dark and continous light
drizzle affecting the day's play, which showed in the results as only
7 competitors finished on a par or better score. Neil Glover of Hilton
was the man though on the day to follow after winning the trophy with
a nett score of 67 off his 8 handicap. Neil who hit a purple patch in
July was one of the early starters and recorded a fine score. A front
9 score of 37 was shot by Neil which included back to back birdies at
holes 6 and 7 to set him up for a 2 over score and then a back 9 of
38 was recorded with a birdie at hole 13 the highlight to leave Neil
with a gross 75 a four over score. Neil said after "Its a major
scoop for me to win this and im delighted, I hit the ball solidly and
although I made a mess of the 9th with a double bogey It was a real
good knock".
Hilton's Neil Glover - Champions Trophy Winner
2007

Runner up to Neil was Ashbourne Man Darren Hooley coming in with a nett
69 off his 11 handicap, seeing his handicap reduced to 10 in the process.
A front 9 score of 39 and back 9 of 41 left Darren with a gross 80 and
he commented by saying "It was a good knock but I made a hash of
the 3rd hole with a double bogey 5 which was costly but it sets my game
up nicely for a trip to the Brabazon Course at the Belfry at the end
of November in which a total of 20 of us are really looking forward
to". R Donnelly and Rob Inglis took the minor honours.

Ken Pulls The Trigger in October Medal
The final singles event of the year was played
for on Sunday October 7th in what can only be described as glorious late
autumn conditions with fine sunshine and calm conditions. The October
Medal was played for off the white tees and some very good scores were
returned on the day with many playing to par or better. Ken "Trigger"
Bainbridge of Swinscoe was the Champion of the Day in Division One playing
the course to a gross par score of 71 leaving Ken with a nett 64 off his
7 handicap. Ken got off to the best possible start by scoring a birdie
at the first hole and recording a one over gross front 9 of 36. An outstanding
birdie at the very tough par 4 11th hole set up Ken and the trigger finger
to let loose with two more birdies on holes 13 and the par 5 15th to leave
Ken with a back 9 score of 35. Ken said after "Ive just had a great
run of form, one or two putts have decided to drop in the hole instead
of lipping out and it makes so much difference to a good or average round".
Runner up was Simon Walwyn shooting the best gross of the day with a score
of 70 off his 5 handicap missing out to Ken by 1 stroke and next in was

smashing a magnificent nett 64 off his 13 handicap winning his division
by a clear 3 shots. Jason who saw his handicap reduced to 12 after this
fine display played to his handicap on the front 9 and it was the back
9 where the damage was done. Jason came home in a gross 35 one under for
the back 9 with a tremendous birdie at 11 and 15 helping him to his win.
Jason said after "Its been a hard season where ive just not managed
to string things together, but today the conditions were superb and I
played really well and everything was solid from tee to green". Runner
up to Jason was Mick Beech with a nett 67 off his 16 handicap with Roston
Man Nick Hamblin in the shake up yet again with a nett 68 off his 13 handicap.
Jason "Chuzzy" Clowes - Winner Division
2 October Medal
Ashbourne's Phil Taylor won Division 3 off his
24 handicap with a nett 68 to win his division by 1 shot. Phil could even
afford the luxury of having a disastrous 10 on his card on the tough par
4 10th hole which if halved could of seen Phil end up with a nett 63 and
is obvioulsly a lot better player than his current handicap suggests and
will soon be into Division 2 on this form. Runner up was Local Man Paul
Higton now producing a bit of form on his return to golf this year by
firing a nett 69 off his 27 handicap and Sean Fernihough was in third,
scoring the best gross in the division with an 88 off his 19 handicap.
Paul "Hicky" Higton - Runner Up Division

2 was won by Bob Carter with a magnificent 25 pointer, followed in by
George Ditchfield and Pete Robinson. Division 3 was won by Roger Wills

This Weekend sees the Texas Scramble being played
for on Saturday and Sunday for Teams of 4. Entries are now being taken
for this year's Winter League competition. Ashbourne Golf Club's Open
Day is being held on Sunday 28th October which includes a free round of
9 holes of golf, Tour of the club's facilities and light refreshments
and will also include a very special offer of Winter Golf from November
to February for just £110. Anyone interested in this great offer
is advised to ring and book a tee slot with Golf Manger Andrew Smith on
01335 347960 on what proves to be a very popular day.
Matchplay Glory For Walwyn
Ashbourne Golf Club's Men's Matchplay winner
for 2007 is Ashbourne Man Steve Walwyn after a titantic tussle against
Derby's Andy Robb. The competition which started out back in April is
the club's version of the FA Cup with a knockout format being played
over 6 rounds of golf. Over 64 members entered the competition with
anyone with a handicap of up to 18 eligible for the competition.
The final took place on Saturday 6th October in what has to be said
great golfing conditions with a very still and mild day. Steve playing
off a 10 handicap had to give Andy one shot as he was off an 11 handicap.
Tony Broadhurst was the referee for the final and after winning the
toss Steve had the best possible start by winning the first 2 holes
with two pars after Andy found the deep rough on the first and his putter
let him down on the second. Andy soon came back though by winning the
third hole after Steve pulled his tee shot left on the par 3 and could
only make double bogey. The fourth was halved and then Steve regained
his 2 hole lead on the par 4 fifth hole when Andy went through the back
of the green and failed to get up and down and the same happened on
the par 4 7th hole when Steve got down for par with a great chip from
off the green and Andy missed a short putt to leave Steve 3 up at the
turn. Steve increased his lead at the 10th hole when his 3rd shot hit
the pin to leave him with a tap in for 4 while Andy could only muster
a bogey 5 to leave him 4 down. Then Andy turned on the style by winning
11 with a par, his shot hole the 12th with a bogey and then followed
a great birdie 3 at the 13th to leave him just one down and applying
the pressure to Steve who had to respond quick with what he did by halving
the next 2 holes with 2 fine pars from each player. The 16th hole was
crucial, the tough par 3 playing just over 190 yards, Andy teed off
first and went through the back with his rescue club, Steve pulled out
the 5 iron which hit the far left bunker lip and flew out into the semi
rough but pin high. Steve's great chip hit the pin again which left
him a tap in for par and when Andy fluffed his first shot he new he
had to chip in for a half which he couldnt manage. Onto the 17th with
Steve 2 up he only had to halve the hole to win the match and after
some words from caddy Scott Cummings he managed to find the deep rough,
not what he wanted. Andy nailed a fine drive down the middle and was
just short of the green in two to put him in pole position after Steve
had got into trouble down the right and could only end up with a bogey
6 which lost him the hole after Andy secured a fine birdie 4.
So with the last hole to play with Steve now only one up the nerves
were hitting both players. Andy decided to take on the pond with his
drive and just managed to get over but found deep rough. Steve thought
twice about the 3 wood but pulled out his driver and found the middle
of the fairway but along way from the green. Deciding to lay up with
the 9 iron Steve hit the perfect shot just short of the green and Andy
could only do the same from his poistition and so it came down to chipping
and putting. Andy needing to win the hole found the front of the green
and so did Steve with their chip shots, so it was down to the putts
and Steve who putted first hit a beauty to 4 foot piling the pressure
on Andy who then put his 3 foot past. So Steve stepped up knowing by
sinking his putt the Matchplay Title would be his and after going firm
and straight the sound of the ball dropping into the hole meant the
fist could be raised and the title was his.
A great match to end a great tournament for 2007. Steve said after "Its
a real honour to win the matchplay, its probably a competition you are
very fortunate to win and im very proud. Full credit to Andy it was
a tough game but my game was good today especially my Driving and Chipping
and its a fantastic feeling!". Andy spoke after saying "It
was a great game, I thought I had Steve on the back 9 but he held his
nerve well and the 16th was the deciding hole, but congratulations to
him".

Wirksworth Duo Win Foursomes
Craig Murphy and Rob Inglis are the new names

of Mick and Gary Beech of Middleton by Wirksworth by 4 and 3. The four
lads who know each other very well played a very sporting final but
Craig who works for Tarmac Topfloors and Rob a self employed window
cleaner just had the better of it. Craig said "It was a good final,
and Gary and Mick are disappointed not to win but we played the better
of the golf today and me and Rob are delighted with the victory. We
were 4 up at the turn and although we lost 11 and 12 we won back 13
and 14 and shook hands on the 15th green". Gary commented by saying
"these two lads play good golf, and play well together, we didnt
make them play as hard as we would of liked for victory but thats the
way golf goes".

Stableford
Win For Ken
On Saturday 15th September the Autumn Stableford was played for off
the white tees, with weather conditions not adhering to the forecast
of sunny intervals as overcast cloudy conditions meant the predicted
18 degrees celcius was never reached and a cool but calm day was in
order. Ken Bainbridge of Swinscoe took to the conditions well though
to win Division 1 with a fine score of 40 stableford points. Ken who
works for JCB and plays off a 8 handicap had a steady front 9 score
of 19 points only dropping 3 shots on the way. The back 9 is where it
all come together though with Ken only dropping the one shot on the
par 3 16th hole and parring the rest to amass 21 points and seeing his
handicap reduced to 7 in the process. Ken said after "Ive not had
the best of season's but it was nice to put a good round together and
a recent outing for the scratch team has benefitted my game". Another

damage was done on the back 9 with a return of 21 points. Highlight

of the deadliest putter's at the club commented after "I had a
good knock but nearly blew it on the last 2 holes coming in with 2 double
bogeys on 17 and 18 so it could of been a nett 66 instead of a 70 but
its a welcome win for me as my handicap has been steadily rising and
not coming down as I would of liked it to!". Following Les in was
Martin Murphy of Ashbourne who fired a steady nett 71 playing off his
14 handicap and was first out at 7.03 am on the day and showed a welcome

high for the division. The winner was Steve Levison of the Shires playing

Bates's recent run of good form continued coming home in 3rd place with
a nett 67 off his 22 handicap.
Adam Wild of Mickleover - Division 1 winner of the September Medal
PRESIDENT'S PUTTER GLORY FOR ROB
Ashbourne's Rob Hancock has won probably the most prestigous golfing
competition to win at Ashbourne Golf Club when winning the President's
Putter Competition for 2007. After 2 rounds of medal play earlier in
the season, the top 8 member's with the best nett scores over the 2
rounds progressed to the knockout stages. Rob then won through his quarter
and semi finals to meet Congleton's Scott Cummings in the final. With
Rob giving Scott 3 shots he was quick out of the blocks over the front
9 holes with Rob taking a commanding 3 hole advantage making gains out
of some wayward putting by Scott to get his nose in front. With the
2 shot holes to come for Scott on 11 and 12 though, Scott reduced the
arrears to one after this pulsating battle with both player's scoring
birdie 4's on the par 5 15th hole.
Caddying for Rob was Tom Porter and Pete Sutton for Scott now new it
was going down to the wire. Rob had a chance to win the match on the
17th but missed his 5 foot putt which seemed to give Scott a lift and
he duly won the 18th to make the match all square and head to the first
extra hole of sudden death. So back on the first tee Scott nailed a
drive down the middle and suddenly Rob felt the pressure with his hands
shaking with nerves he pulled out his 3 wood and landed just 10 yards
behind Scott. Both players then found the green and with Scott to putt
first he rolled it past the hole and missed the return putt to give
him a bogey 5. Rob the former policeman and now evidence review officer
at St Mary's Wharf got down in par to make him winner of the President's
Putter 2007. Rob said after "I thought the nerves had got the better
of me, what a match that was, but im delighted with the win and im very
proud to win this competition". Scott paid credit to Rob saying
"It was a great game, I thought I had him after levelling things
up but my putt let me down on the first extra hole and thats golf for
you".
President's Putter Winner 2007 - Rob Hancock
The Men's Matchplay Final has now been decided
and Ashbourne's Steve Walwyn overcame John Hammond to book his spot
and will play Andrew Robb of Derby who overcame Julian Setford. The
Brown and Bailey Doubles Final will be contested by Craig Murphy and
Rob Inglis both of Wirksworth who will play Mick and Gary Beech of Middleton
by Wirksworth.
Nigel Brown's Charity Day on Wednesday 12th September had a record turn
out of 30 teams taking part in this team event. The teams of 4 playing
off the yellow tees with a 3/4 handicap had the weather and great prize
table to compete for. A par score on the day would of been 80 points
but the winning total was 97 points scored by the Friday.Com team comprimising
of Colin Haynes (Allestree), Paul Haynes (Mercaston), Robert Rooney
(Sutton On The Hill) and John Woolley (Notts). Runners Up were Ashbourne
Member's Brian Bates, P Garner, John Hammond and John Mordey on 95 points.
This group also won the yellow ball team prize with 45 stableford points.
Prizes went down to 15th and also Captain in waiting Peter Cliffe won
the nearest the pin on the 3rd hole using his course knowledge and longest
drive was won by Mr Illiffe of the Frank Wrights Golf Team. Special
thanks were given to Nigel Brown, John Plant and Phil Derbyshire for
their efforts in raising funds for the local charities.

This weekend sees the Captain's Tankard played
for on both Saturday and Sunday off the white tees, a pairs competition
in a bogey format. Member's are also reminded that the Mick Grundy Charity
Am/Am takes place on Sunday 30th September and there are still places
available at going to press.
Open Glory For Steve And Scott
Ashbourne's Steve Walwyn and Congleton's Scott Cummings
were crowned as the winners of the 2007 Ashbourne Open held on Sunday
19th August. The biggest pairs event at the club throughout the season
had a magnificent turn out of 86 pairs on the day seeing the tee times
booked from 7.30 in the morning through till the last starting time
of 3pm. The one off competition played off the white tees had the best
turn out for a few years maybe down to the fact of the great condition
the course is in at present. Handicaps were altered to an allowance
of 3/4 with the maximum number of shots being allowed of 14 on the day.Teeing
off at just after midday in overcast and sometimes heavy showers, Steve
playing off a 11 handicap and receiving 8 shots and Scott playing off
13 and receiving 10 got off to the best possible start when Steve had
a birdie 3 on the opening par 4 hole. Gross birdies then followed at
holes 8 for Steve and hole 13 for Scott which really gave the pair momentum.
Steve's front 9 really allowed breathing space for the pair with nett
birdies at hole 2 and the tough par 3 9th they carded a gross 34 with
a nett 30 score with the only bogey on the front 9 coming on the par
3 3rd hole where both players hit 4's.
On the back 9 Scott kicked into gear with a nett birdie coming on the
notorious par 4 11th hole with driving rain coming into their faces
making it feel like an eagle and with the gross birdie on 13 and another
nett birdie on 15 for Scott the pair new they were looking good at this
stage. Only a gross bogey on stroke index 1 the par 4 12th blotted their
back 9. A nett birdie for Steve on the par 3 16th got them into a winning
position however when both players hit the fairway bunkers after 2 shots
each on the par 5 17th a bogey looked onto the cards to put a dent into
the score but Steve managed a great recovery shot out of the bunker
and managed to get up and down for a par 5. Scott with a shot on the
last hole decided to take on the notorious pond with his driver which
had Steve biting his nails and cursing but he absolutely nailed it to
leave him with a wedge to the green and after a cautious first putt
leaving a teasing 6 footer for par, Scott duly sunk it for a nett birdie
to give the pair a cracking 10 under par score of 61 and win the famous
Ashbourne Claret Jug by 2 clear shots. Steve commented by saying "we
just clicked today and we always thought we had a great chance of winning
the Claret Jug and its just a dream to do it and its a very proud day
for both of us. The par putt for a 3 on the 6th hole from 15 foot downhill
with a vicious swing that I holed really was the shot that got us going
and Scott just played awesome at times". A gross score of 70 by
the pair was also the best on the day. Playing partner's Alan Keizer
of Kniveton a regular with the senior crowd at the club and Steve Mitchell
of Norwich were very quick to congratulate the pair with Alan commenting
after by saying "Steve had a super front 9 it was a real pleasure
to watch some super golf, and Scott had a great back 9, they were two
lads on top of their game today and it was great to see them win, there
two great guys and well done to them".
Presentations were made in the clubhouse to the winners on the day who
included nearest the pin on the par 3 14th won by Ashbourne Policeman
Tom Porter, best gross won by Leon Lewis and partner, and runners up
Ian Atterbury and Sean Fernihough who came in with a nett 63. The famous
Ashbourne Claret Jug was presented to Steve and Scott along with the
latest Titleist Golf Carry Bags by Captain Steve Bryan. Steve made a
speech afterwards thanking the bar staff and caterers, greenkeepers
for the great condition of the course and Andrew Smith for registering
all entrants on the day. A special thanks were made to Pete Wood who
gave up his sunday to be the starter for the day and to Bob Carter for
organising the competition and making sure everything ran smoothly.
Finally Steve thanked playing partners Alan and Steve and also to Scott
for what turned out to be both their proudest day so far at the club
in lifting the trophy. Scott also paid his thanks to playing partner
Steve and endorsed his comments before the pair left to a raptuous applause
from the full clubhouse.

AUGUST
MEDAL
On Saturday 18th August in fine conditions for the morning
starters but dismal rainy conditions for the afternoon starters the
August Medal was played for off the white tees. With many members turning
out the following day for the Ashbourne Open the field was smaller than
usual but there was still some good scores and good competition play
taking place. Division 1 winner was Ashbourne's Ian Atterbury coming
in with a fine nett 67 off his 11 handicap. Ian had a flawless front
9 score of 35 the par for the front 9 which included birdies at holes
4 and 6. A much difficult task though was to come on the back 9 with
a score of 43 but the front 9 was where the hard work was done and enabled
Ian to come home in front. Ian said "I was due a win in some shape
or form, I feel my game has come on a lot this summer and this is a
good reward for me, my powerful driving got me going today and im sure
I can improve again". Runner up to Ian was Johnathan Milne with
the best gross of the day a 72 off a 4 handicap seeing his handicap
reduced to 3 in the process, with R Stone in third place with a nett
69.
Ian Atterbury - Division 1 winner August Medal
Division 2 winner was Stuart
Swalwell of Ashbourne with a nett score of 65off his 13 handicap. The
Rolls Royce employee had a fine gross 40 on the front 9 the highlight
being a birdie 4 on the par 5 8th hole. The back 9 was where Stuart
won it though with a tremendous gross 38. After a poor double bogey
on 10 the pressure was on but Stuart parred in after that with a great
birdie 2 on the par 3 16th only blemished with a bogey on 18 but that
didnt matter. Stuart said "Yes I had a great back 9, probably the
best ive had around here for a very long time and I just hope I can
do the same next week, that would be some going!!". Mark Rayner
was in 2nd place with a fine nett 66 off his 13 handicap with R Keen
in third on a nett 67.
Division 3 winner was Mickleover's Neil Mowatt who had a fine nett 69
off his 23 handicap. Victory saw Neil get into Champions Day in October
with 44 on the front and 48 coming home to win the division. Neil said
" I didnt really play particulary well, I had three scores of 7
on my card and had a bit of trouble getting over the pond on 12th but
its a nasty second shot there if you dont get in the right position
isnt it by god. Happy to win as always but it was a messy round by all
means!!". Neil was followed home by John Dumpleton who just lost
out on a countback also with a nett 69 off his 20 handicap with Sean
Fernihough coming third with a nett 70.
Neil Mowatt - August Medal Division 3 winner
Coming up this weekend
is the Captain's Fun Day on Saturday with a shotgun start from 2pm onwards
and on Sunday is the September Medal off the white tees. Nigel Brown's
charity golf day takes place on Wednesday 12th September with a huge

16th September, tickets again from Nigel costing £6 all welcome
but be quick cause it sells out very quickly.
Glory Glory Dave Barrie
On Saturday 11th August in lovely summer sunshine
with temperatures reaching the predicted 24 degrees celcius a good turnout
of just under 100 members fought to win the Rose Cup. Playing off the
white tees the competition was played in a bogey format with competitors
playing against the course with plus scores for birdies or better, zero
for par and a minus for bogey or worse. Dave Barrie Senior known as "Mr
Consistent" for his fine season, the 5 handicapper from the Top of
the Hill always there or there abouts in competitions finally came good
by winning the Rose Cup with a score of plus 5. Dave who had been runner
up this season on many occasions must have been wondering what more he
had to do to win a competition this year but he finally put it to bed
by becoming champion of the day. Dave's round could not have started any
better with a birdie 3 on the first hole and a gross eagle 3 on the par
8th hole which set Dave up for a steady plus 2 score after 9 holes. The
back 9 had a bad start though with a bogey on the 10th, but this was followed
by 2 plus scores on the next 2 holes followed by a plus score on the par
3 16th hole and a great birdie 4 on the 17th making Dave's final score
of plus 5 the winning total. After his round Dave spoke and said "Im
delighted to win, Ive had a great season without really winning anything
which has been a little disappointing as Ive played some good golf this
year but today has put a smile on my face today!".
Another 5 handicapper in the form of youngster Craig Young from Marchington
had another fine knock by winning Division 1 with a great score of plus
4 and is really a lad to look out for in the future as he is one of the
best young talents at the club. Credit must be given to his dad Pete Young
also a member at the club and Darren Barker who seem to be bringing the
best out in the youngster. Craig had birdies at holes 2,5 and 8 on the
front 9 to come out with a plus 2 score followed by plus scores on the
back 9 at holes 11,12 and 16 which eventually gave Craig the division
with a plus 4 score. Division 2 winner and a very unfortunate not to win
the Rose Cup was Leek's Scott Cummings who also recorded a great score
of plus 5 on the day only to lose out on a countback to Dave Barrie Snr.
Scott's front 9 was littered with plus scores coming out with plus 4 but
the back 9 came a little tougher to Scott recording a plus 1 score after
a topsy turvy back 9. Scott's playing partner Harry Seed said "He
could of done plus 8 easy, he hits the ball further than I go on holiday!!".
Scott added "I played some good golf but my concentration dipped
in places and cost me with some silly shots and putts".
Scott Cummings - Division 2 winner Rose Cup
Ashbourne Lad Will Austin from Handel Mews continues his recent burst
of fine form coming second with a plus 4 score and saw his handicap reduced
to 15 in the process. Division 3 winner came from Ashbourne aswell in
the name of Steve "wally" Wilson who produced his best round
of the season to come home with a plus 6 score and saw his handicap reduced
from 22 to 20 after the round. Steve had a steady front 9 with a plus
1 score but the back 9 produced the results of his fine round coming home
with a plus 5 score. From holes 11 to 16 everyone was a plus hole, a fine
achievement by this improving Ashburnian and surely it wont be long before
Steve is promoted into the 2nd Division. Runner up was another Ashbourne
Lad and improving golfer Sean Fernihough who after recently joining the
club has seen his handicap reduced to 22 after recording a plus 4 score
and taking 2nd place in the division.
Wednesday's 9 holer on 15th August again proved very popular but with
the nights drawing in now, realistically you can tee off no later than
6.30pm. Winner of Division 1 with a fantastic gross score of 1 over par
36 was Wirksworth's Craig Murphy. The soon Dad to be Playing off a 12
handicap Craig showed a return to form after a quiet spell with a nett
30.

Runner up was Middleton by Wirksworth's Gary
Beech with the best gross on the day with a par 35 giving Gary a nett

Bob Carter took the runner up spot also with a nett 32 off his 14 to just

Division 3 was won by D Martin on a nett 31, followed in by Sean Fernihough
and B Moore both on nett 31.5. The two's comp was won by Pete Sutton,
Ron Salisbury, Craig Murphy and Gary Beech. The next charity event at
Ashbourne Golf Club sees Nigel Brown's Golf Day for local charities take
place on Wednesday 12th September for teams of 4 golfers. The day which
always proves very popular costs £80 per team and there is always
a very large prize table. Entry forms are now available from Nigel's Butchers
or alternatively Nigel can be contacted on 01335 342073. Also another
event being staged at the clubhouse at Ashbourne Golf Club is the ever
popular and famous Stars In Your Eyes Night on Friday 14th September.
Tickets are available again from Nigel costing £6 per person on
a first come first served basis on a night which usually sells out very
quickly and everyone is welcome. Nigel is also on the lookout for a couple
more singers to perform on the night and anyone brave enough to have a
go are also urged to contact Nigel. This Saturday sees the Dove Valley
Trophy being played for, a pairs event played off the white tees. Early
indications from Sunday's Ashbourne Open saw the winners coming in with
a score of nett 61 in the form of Local Man Steve Walwyn and Scott Cummings
of Leek winning the Famous Claret Jug. Full report next week.
Ashbourne Men Win Charity Golf Day
The British Heart Foundation held a charity golf day staged
at Ashbourne Golf Club on Tuesday 14th August. Overall a good turnout
of 19 teams of four played in a stableford format off a 3/4 handicap with
the best 2 nett scores to count on each hole. Even the dreadful summer
weather of continuous rain did not deter the players with every team entered
going out to play. Winner's of the day were four local men and also members
of Ashbourne Golf Club, Steve Walwyn, Anthony Bates, Dean Higton and Simon
Walwyn coming in with a score of 87 stableford points. Scoring 42 on the
front 9 helped with gross birdies on the par 5 8th hole by Steve and Dean
gaining 6 points and nett birdies the very next hole by Simon and Dean
gaining another 6 points the foursome gained momentum from there onwards.
A back 9 score of 45 points which included 7 points on the par 3 16th
with a nett eagle for Anthony and nett birdie for Steve followed by another
6 points on the par 5 17th with the help of a great eagle 3 for Simon
and par for Dean.
The Ashbourne Men also won a team ball competition on the day winning
a cash prize of £64 which was duly returned and donated back to
the Charity. In second place were the Birkett Boys with 85 points whose
team included Les Birkett, Brian Bates, Dave Barrie Jnr and Steve Waring.
Longest Drive on the 17th hole was won by Nick Prince from Roston and
nearest the pin on the 14th was won by Chris Bloor. A special mention
and big thankyou must be given to the organiser of the day Brian Bradley
who made sure everything ran to perfection and did a tremendous job. Brian
thanked all those that entered and revealed that in the region of £1700
had be raised on the day for the British Heart Foundation which brought
warm applause at the presentation in the clubhouse. Brian also thanked
the Caterer's, Club Steward Alan Wilton and his staff, the greenkeeper's
for the great condition of the course and to Club Manager Andrew Smith
for all his help on the day.
Club Captain Steve Bryan also thanked the generosity of Mr Peter Gadsby
of Cedar House Developments for again sponsoring the prize table. Winning
Captain of the Top Of The Hill Team Steve Walwyn endorsed the speech made
by Brian Bradley and Steve Bryan and thanked his playing partners for
a great days golf.

Scramble Win For Dougie's Men
On
a quieter weekend for competition play at Ashbourne Golf Club, a texas
scramble was held off the forward tees in a social format for teams
of 3 and 4 players in lovely summer weather on Saturday 4th August.
The game where all the player's tee off and then the best drive is selected
and all player's hit the second shot from that position and so on in
that format produced some very low scores. The winning four ball team
was made up of Ashbourne regulars Dougie Sellers, Paul Smith, Mel Godfrey
and Neil Mowatt recording a gross score of 64 less a combined handicap
of 13.9 shots giving them a nett score of 50.1 a tremendous score.
Captain of the team Dougie Sellers and local builder commented after
the round by saying "The boys played really well, Mel had some
great drives along with Paul and me and Neil chipped and putted well
and we new the score would take some beating, we were awesome today
out there". Doug who is also known as the "King of Clubs"
for being one of the biggest cards in the club celebrated into the early
hours of Sunday morning as after finishing his round he attended a wedding

make history was Jill Bainbridge of Swinscoe who throughoughly enjoyed
the match and although the team lost 4 and 2 she was welcomed by both
sets of players.
This Saturday sees the August Medal played for off the white tees and
on Sunday one of the biggest competitions takes place the Ashbourne
Open, a men's fourball better ball medal competition. At going to press

the pro shot on 01335 347960 for further details. The Rose Cup was played
for on Saturday 11th August with early pace setters reportedly scoring
a score of +5 to take the early clubhouse lead.
Cup Joy For Big Daz
Ashbourne Man Darren Hooley had a good reason to smile on Saturday 28th
July after scoring his best round of the season to win the Burkhill Cup.
Played off the white tees in fine weather Darren who works as contracts
manager for local company PMR Fixer's and is also chairman of the Green's
Committee at Ashbourne Golf Club fired a gross score of 79 off his 12
handicap to give him a nett score of 67. Darren commented after his fine
round by saying "Its all down to my new Taylor Made r7 Driver and
Irons really, Ive just started to get used to them and its made a big
difference to my game. My putting has also improved, I sunk a marvellous
25 footer on the last for par and all I could hear was Chuzzy muttering
youve got more jam than hartleys after the ball sunk into the cup!!".
Darren's front 9 score of 37 enabled him to have breathing space on the
back 9 which he needed after two double bogey's on holes 12 and 16, but
a great birdie 4 earlier on hole 8 saw him on the way to victory with
a gross 42 coming home.
Ashbourne Man Darren Hooley - Burkhill Cup Winner
2007

Division 1 winner was Craig Young of Marchington with a cracking 73 gross
off his 5 handicap giving him a nett 68. The youngster who has forged
his way into the scratch team this year had birdies on the front 9 at
holes 3 and 8 giving him a gross 35 and dropping just the two shots on
the back 9 coming home in 38 a fine score was acheived. Runner up was
playing partner Darren Barker who shot the lowest gross of the day 72
off his 4 handicap and Mark Wild of Mickleover followed them home in third
place with a nett 70 off his 8 handicap. Mayfield Man Gavin Ratcliffe
who is mentioned almost weekly in the golf reports, can raise a smile
again after winning Division 2 by playing to his handicap of 17 and recording
a nett par score of 71. A cracking season for Gavin so far who said "I
didnt play anything special today and I was taken by suprise to see I
had won the division as its usually a score of 66 or 67 that wins but
the breeze was there and it did make things tricky". Gavin shot 44
front and back 9 for a gross score of two fat ladies the magical 88 with
the highlight being a great birdie 4 on the par 5 15th hole. Lloyds TSB
employee Steve Atkins was runner up losing out on a countback to Gavin
with the same nett score of 71 with Ex Ashbourne Town Player Martin Murphy
coming into form with a nett 73 off his 14 handicap taking third place.
New Member R Jozefiak took Division 3 by a mile with a sublime gross score
of 90 off his 28 handicap winning by a massive 11 shots. Local Builder
Simon Knight took the runner up spot with a nett 73 off his 24 handicap
with Doug Westerman coming home in 3rd place with a nett 73 off his 26
handicap.

Trophy Joy For Don
The following day the Derek Earp Trophy was played for in lovely golfing
weather with a little south easterly breeze with temperatures reaching
the predicted 20 degrees celcius. Scoring was found to be a little harder
than the previous day with the stronger breeze the culprit. Cromford's
most famous newsagent Don Mcintosh who started the day at 5 am delivering
the Sunday newspaper's found that getting up at this time on a sunday
had no effect as teeing off at the club at 11.30 was the ideal time to
shoot his best round of the season. Don scored 22 points on the front
9 and 19 coming home and saw his handicap reduced from 15 to 13. After
his round Don commented "I had a steady round, no birdies and I even
managed a no score on the 12th hole so I could of been even better but
im well chuffed today and I putted really well, I might make the sport
headlines after this round, no pun intended" said Don tongue in cheek.
Don Mcintosh of Cromford - Derek Earp Trophy
Winner 2007
Division 1 winner was P Garner of Derby with a fine return of 39 points
off his 11 handicap who couldnt of started off better with a birdie on
the first hole and the 4th on the front 9 giving him 22 points. A back
9 score of 17 which is always known as the tougher 9 holes gave him a
winning total. B Grice lost out in a countback also with 39 points and
Mark Wild who had a fine weeked came 3rd with 37 points and was a little
miffed after scoring 23 of them on the front 9 and blowing up on the back
9 with the Trophy at his mercy. Trevor McCabe of Allestree won Division
2 with a score of 39 off his 16 handicap with Ashbourne's Barrie Ritchie
and Chris Carter next in both with 38 points. A special mention to Scott
Cummings who required a toilet break after the second hole in the afternoon's
play which held up play for roughly 20 minutes but luckily there was no
group behind him otherwise he might have been put on the clock by the
officials for slow play. Division 3 winner was Lime Grove resident Jim
Platt who was last out on the course coming home with 40 points. It was
a delayed celebration for Jim who had to return on Monday to enter his
scorecard after finding the Clubhouse locked after finishing his round
in near darkness to return his score. Highlight of Jim's round was a fine
par 3 on the ultra tough 9th hole gaining Jim 4 points to help him to
23 points on the front 9 and 17 on the back and seeing his handicap reduced
to 24 after this round. Runner up was A Nicholls with 39 points and Sean
Fernihough was 37 points in third place.

Centenary Cup - Glory For Police Inspector
Inspector H Frost of the Derbyshire Constabulary was
toast of the Ashbourne Golf Club on Sunday 22nd July by winning the
Centenary Cup. Played off the white tees in a medal format with conditions
favouring the golfer with the rarity of hazy sunshine up above instead
of the usual rain which has become the norm, many players thrived in
the better conditions. Inspector Frost from Hulland Ward playing off
a 19 handicap saw it fall by 2 shots after this fine round. Highlights
of the round were gross birdies at holes 8 and 13, which saw a front
9 score of 42 and a back 9 of 41 giving an overall total of 83 and with
the handicap of 19 coming off a nett score of 7 under par 64 was recorded.
A countback was required though to see out the winner as Simon Lockwood
also of Hulland Ward came in with a nett 65 off his handicap of 15 and
the Inspector was awarded the cup after having the better back 9 score.
Dave "Shooter" Bainbridge of Swinscoe who is having a fine
season was rewarded yet again by winning Division 1 with a nett score
of 68 off his 3 handicap. Playing the course to par with a gross score
of 71 that was not really the true story as Shooter had a superb front
9 going out in a gross 32, 3 under par. A hat-trick of birdies on holes
4 ,5 and 6 set Dave up for a great start although struggling on the
back 9 on holes 15 and 16 Dave let it slip a little. After his fine
round Dave said "The front 9 was great for me with the run of birdies
I had but the back 9 was so frustrating for me dropping shots on 11
and 12 for a start and then I tried to take on the par 5 15th in two
with driver and then rescue club but i put it in the quarry and ended
up with a double bogey 7. I really thought at one stage I had the course
record in sight but it wasnt meant to be". Dennis Dawson's fine
season continues with the runners up spot with a nett 70 off his 6 handicap
followed in by Iain Needham of Uttoxeter with a nett 70 also. Division
2 winner was Simon Lockwood as mentioned above followed in by Jim Lewsley
of Allestree with a nett 67 off his 16 handicap reduced to 14 after
his fine score. Top of the Hill lad Will Austin of Ashbourne continues
his fine burst of form coming home in third spot with a nett 69 off
his 16 handicap. Third Division winner was Terry Brown of Kniveton scoring
a fine nett 67 off his 22 handicap which was slashed to 20 afterwards.
Terry said "Ive been playing well in recent weeks and I had a good
knock today which could of been even better but I had a bit of a nightmare
on the 4th hole and got in all sorts of trouble but thankfully I still
managed to put that hole behind me and record a good score although
I didnt think it would of been good enough to win in this division".
Playing partner's George Ditchfield and Nick "Algie" Fearn
continue there rise in the golfing ranks both scoring nett 71's off
their respective handicaps of 21 and 28.

The Captain's away day outing at Beeston Fields Golf Club in Nottingham
turned out to be a very wet day indeed with 40 member's turning out
for the occasion to enjoy 18 holes and a fine banquet to be served up
afterwards. Although starting out in the rain on Friday 20th July the
proceedings were called to a halt after torrential rain caused flooding
to many of the greens after about an hour and a half of the first group
going out which meant the golf was cancelled for the day. Unfortunately
Terry Brown of Kniveton and Derby's Dave Smith never heard the cancellation
call and returned some four hours later to loud applause from the Ashbourne
Members in the Clubhouse Bar after completing the course. Beeston Fields
apologised for the weather and confirmed that another day had been pencilled
in to replay the event in September.
This Sunday sees the Mixed Brooker Shield played for, a combination
of Lady and Gent Member played in a medal format.
Weekend Glory For Glover
On Saturday 14th July the Dethick Cup was contested
at Ashbourne Golf Club off the white tees in breezy conditions making
scoring quite testing. Played in a stableford format the outright winner
was Phil Roworth of Longford scoring 44 points off his 21 handicap, but
with the competition played to a maximum of handicap of 18 Phil saw his
score reduced to 41 points which was still good enough to win the Cup.
Highlight of Phil's round was a birdie 2 at the par 3 14th hole and even
scoring no points on the par 5 17th he still returned 44 points seeing
his handicap reduced to 18 in the process. Hilton Member Neil Glover who
has been knocking on the door in recent weeks finally came good in Division
1 with a score of 40 stableford points, scoring 19 on the front 9 and
21 points coming home. Neil who is a regional director for MITIE said
"I had a pretty steady round in all fairness nothing really spectacular
i just got from tee to green well, and my score would of been better but
for missing probably 4 or 5 short putts from inside 4 foot".
Runner up to Neil was Iain Needham on 38 points and Nick Prince of Roston
playing to his handicap of 11 by scoring 36 points. Division 2 winner
was Mayfield Man Gavin Ratcliffe who continues his improvement over the
past couple of years by seeing his handicap reduced yet again and is now
down to 17 now after scoring 40 points. Gavin put his improvement down
to practicing as much as he can and saved the best till last on his round
by scoring a great birdie on the very last hole bagging him 4 points.
Runner up was Daniel Harbey and R Keen both scoring 38 points. A special
mention must go to ex Ashbourne Town Footballer Martin Murphy showing
signs of a return to form after a quiet spell scoring 37 points and just
finishing out of the frame.
Divison 3 winner was new member Sean Fernihough scoring 46 points and
seeing his handicap adjusted to 24 followed in by Ashbourne Man Paul "Hicky"
Higton finally producing a good score of 39 points after some recent frustrating
rounds. Young Ashbourne Junior member Scott Wood posted a fine score of
38 points to come home in third place off his 22 handicap.

Martin Murphy - Returning to Form with 37 points
MORE GLOVER GLORY
The following day Sunday 15th July the Midsummer Medal was played for
in somewhat torrential rain conditions in the morning followed by calmer
conditions from 2pm onwards. Those members that did brave the elements
found scoring tough due to the yet again abnormal summer conditions. Neil
Glover who plays left handed and a winner on the previous day carried
on his great weekend of form by returning a nett 69 off his 8 handicap
to win Division 1. Neil's highlight was a birdie 4 on the par 5 2nd hole
which saw him shoot 38 on the front nine holes and 39 coming home giving
him a gross 77. Neil said "It was a good weekend, I dont usually
play both days but I did this weekend and I had two really good knocks.
My new white hot fang putter has made quite a difference to my game although
conditions today were terrible and the worst ive played in for a long
time".
Local Lad Ian Atterbury returned to form coming home in second place with
a nett 69 aswell only losing out on a countback with Barry Grice of Allestree
coming home in third. Division 2 was won by Ian Faulkner of Wirksworth,
the Gents Hairdresser winning with a nett 67 off his 15 handicap which
was reduced by 2 shots on the strength of this fine round. Doing the front
and back 9 in 41 strokes giving Ian a gross score of 82. Middleton by
Wirksworth member Mick Beech was 4 shots back in second place with a nett
71 off his 16 handicap followed in by Ian Clifford on a nett 74. Division
3 winner was Club President Brian Bates playing to his handicap of 23
by returning a par score of 71 and commented by saying "The rain
was torrential at times but it seems to bring the best out of me for some
unknown reason and I was pleased as punch with that round and I think
anybody out there today in these conditions playing to their handicap
would have been very happy". Following Brian in was Old Derby Road
resident John Mordey with a nett 76 followed in by B Hall.

Prince Retains Scratch Cup
On
Saturday 7th July in warm and sunny conditions a small and select field
battled it out for the Scratch Cup off the white tees over 36 holes. A
competition which mainly sees the lower handicappers battle it out to
see who is top dog at the club over a morning 18 holes and an afternoon's
play of 18 holes. Winner and Still the holder of the cup is local lad
James Prince of Roston after shooting a tremendous 1 under gross score
of 141 for the two rounds. On a day which saw many of his opponents struggle
James a plus one handicapper easily took the cup by 7 shots from nearest
opponent G Thacker who came in with 148 and Simon Walwyn back in third
place. Wet conditions in the week saw placing on the fairways and plugged
balls in the rough having a free drop which is really only seen in the
winter months, showing how the rain has even affected the golf course
over the last few weeks. A social stableford was held on the same day
for members off the yellow tees with Winner's Rob Hancock in Division
1 scoring 38 points and having a fine season, R Keen with 39 points in
Division 2 and Mayfield's John Hitchcock winning Division 3 with a splendid
40 points.

JULY
MEDAL
On Sunday 8th July member's turned out for
the July Medal played off the white tees in a day which mainly stayed
clear from the recent wet weather. Just under 100 members teed off and
again star of the show and a winner from last month in Division 1 was
Mickleover Player Andy Jordan who scored a cracking gross 72 off a 5
handicap giving him a nett 67 and win the division by 3 clear shots.
Andy said after his round "I had a slight hangover from the evening
before after hosting a barbecue and didnt know whether a 9am tee off
on a sunday morning was a good idea, but im sure glad I made it I had
a great day and the birdie on hole 8 was a corker!!". Going out
in 35 and coming home in 37 Andy saw off Dave Barrie Senior who scored
a nett 70 off his 5 handicap and must surely wonder what more he has
to do to win a medal or cup this season after coming runner up so many
times. In third place was Neil Glover and Rob Inglis both on nett 70.
Nigel Taylor of Wirksworth took the Division 2 honours scoring a nett
68 off his 15 handicap going out in 42 and coming home in 41. Ashbourne's

have played to my handicap today and i feel my game is progressing well".

nett 71's also to tie. Biggest winning margin came in the third division

in dreadful conditions which would of seen many of courses closed due
to the continuous downpours but luckily the drainage at Ashbourne's
Course is very good. Member's in the morning probably had the better
of conditions as those turning out in the afternoon and evening deserved
a medal for their efforts in awful conditions. Winner of Division 1
was Dave Lowe with 19 points seeing off John Mabbott on a countback.
Evergreen Asa Kirkham showed how it was done in Division 2 with 17 points,

Captain Fantastic!!
On Sunday 24th June the Derbyshire Union of Golf
Clubs held its 2nd and 3rd Division Meeting Competition at Cavendish Golf
Club in Buxton. The Ashbourne Club sent out 3 teams of representatives
in playing conditions that can only be described as horrendous as the
rain of June certainly came down in Buxton. The J.Sayers Trophy was also
played for by Captain's of Clubs in Derbyshire and low and behold Ashbourne
Captain Steve Bryan became only the Golf Club's 4th name on the trophy
by winning with a nett 79. Last won by former Ashbourne Captain Dave Insley
in 1981, Steve now becomes holder of the famous trophy for a year something
that he will treasure during his year in term. Steve Commented by saying
"the conditions were awful and it never stopped raining throughout
the day, but I hung in there and posted a good score in the conditions
but I didnt think it would be good enough, but hey thats golf for you
and the trophy has now taken the centre stage on my mantlepiece".
Steve's fine golfing performance on Sunday didnt shine through into Wednesday's
9 holer unfortunately when on the first tee he duck hooked his tee shot
and narrowly missed a Giant Crow 30 yards down the fairway which had his
playing partners Dennis Dawson and Steve Walwyn in fits of laughter. Luckily
the crow flew off unharmed thanks to the relief of the Captain!!
Captain Steve Bryan with the J.Sayers Trophy
Other good fortune on the same day and competition saw Ashbourne member
Craig Murphy from Wirksworth win the Third Division with a gross 80 nett
68 and runner up was also Ashbourne member Ian "Mappy" Whitehouse.

Captain's Prize For Dennis
On Sunday 1st July The Ashbourne Golf Club Captain Steve
Bryan held his Captains Day Competition in a stableford format off the
white tees. A magnificent turn out of 145 members, the best this season
saw the starting sheet fully booked from 7 in the morning until 3 in the
afternoon. However the early morning starters probably had the worst of
the weather with constant rain falling until around 10 in the morning
followed by frequent squally showers still not dampening the spirits of
the hardy members competing.
Overall winner of the Captain's Prize went to the inform man of the moment
from Clifton, Dennis Dawson who shot a brilliant 72 gross score giving
him a return of 42 points off a 7 handicap a truly superb acheivement.
Par for the front 9 at Ashbourne Golf Club is 35 so when Dennis scored
a 4 under round of 31 things were starting to look special. After scoring
two 2's in the previous Wednesday's 9 holer competition Dennis only decided
to go one better this time around scoring an incredible hat-trick of two's
including an eagle 2 on the par 4 fourth hole after chipping in leaving
playing partner Matt O'Shaughnessy in disbelief. Dennis said "It
was a special hole i wont forget in a hurry, I took a Driver off the tee
and 7 iron into the green and blow me i heard the ball hit the pin but
didnt realise it had gone in!!". Birdies at holes 7 and 9 set Dennis
up for a fantastic score on the front 9, but after finding the back 9
a little tougher with just a birdie at the par 3 14th hole Dennis came
home in 41 shots giving him 17 points for 42 points in total. After his
marvellous round Dennis saw his handicapped reduced to 6 and said "I
new it was coming, ive played so well this year". After receiving
his prize at the clubhouse ceremony Dennis thanked the Captain Steve Bryan
for the day aswell as his playing partners Matt O'Shaughnessy and Andy
Gardner and greenstaff for getting the course back into a good condition.
Winner of the gross prize on the day would also of been Dennis with his
72 but as he won the Captain's Prize he was ineligible, so the prize went
to Dave "Shooter" Bainbridge playing off his 3 handicap came
in with a gross 74 returning 36 points with the highlight being a fine
birdie 4 on the par 5 eighth hole. All Divisional winners won a fantastic
wall clock and these were Paul Withnall in Division 1 with 39 points,
Jim Lewsley in Division 2 with 39 points and A Hodgson in Division 3 with
38 points who narrowly saw off George Ditchfield on a countback. Captain
Steve Bryan thanked in his speech everyone behind the scenes who helped
the day run so smoothly including Golf Club Manager Andrew Smith, Starter
Peter Wood and the Greens Staff and also the Lady Members who served the
half way house refreshments.

was Kirby in Ashfield Member Lee Hayes-Bradley recording a sensational
46 points off his 22 handicap. Scoring a cracking 27 points on the front
9 more than some members scored in 18 holes!! Lee set his self up for
a great score with the highlight being a gross birdie 3 on the tough
par 4 7th hole securing 4 points. Going out in 37 gross and coming home

the ever steady Dave Barrie Senior surely one of the most consistent
golfers at the club in third place with 38 points. Division 2 winner

off his 16 handicap which was reduced to 14 after this round. Roger's
highlight was a birdie 3 on the tough par 4 10th hole, with 22 points

Double Delight For Dawson
Clifton Man Dennis Dawson had a round to remember in
Wednesday's 9 Hole competition by securing two 2's in his round bagging
him the lion's share of the prize pool in the two's competition. Dennis
who plays off a 7 handicap bagged his first birdie 2 on the third hole
by hitting a 5 iron to 6 feet and then sinking a tricky downhill putt
on the testing green. On to the next par 3 the sixth hole measuring
just over 145 yards uphill, Dennis pulled out the same club and hit
a terrific shot into the heart of the green leaving an uphill putt of
just over 10 feet which he duly sunk and punched the air in delight.
The hat-trick was on at the 9th tee the final par 3 of the front 9 but
getting under the ball with his 5 wood Dennis left it short on the bank
but still managed a creditable bogey 4 on a very tough hole. A gross
score of 36 left him just one over gross also securing Dennis 4th place
on a night of very good scoring. Dennis said "Ive been playing
well in May and June without really troubling the judge but my games
in great nick and its been a great night. I bought some new Footjoy
shoes last week and it feels like im walking around the course in a
pair of slippers they are that comfy". Dennis shared his 2 prize's
with B Rankine and B Wheeman.
The man of the moment Rob Inglis played to par giving him a nett 30
off his handicap to win Division 1 followed in by Ashbourne's Steve
Walwyn who scored a gross 36 giving him a nett 30.5 off his 11 handicap
which included back to back birdies on holes 7 and 8 with Rob Hancock
continuing his fine season with 3rd spot with a nett 32. Division 2

Setford Wins the Mick Grundy
On Sunday 17th June in somewhat humid conditions the Mick Grundy Trophy
was played for off the White Tees in a medal format. With the course
conditions improving by the week, this was represented by some great
scores being returned on the day which in all fairness were perfect
golfing conditions. Outright winner of the Trophy was Derby Man Julian
Setford playing off a 13 handicap returned a nett score of 64 after
playing to 6. Scoring a gross 40 on the front 9, Julian's highlight
was a stomping birdie 2 at the extremely tough par 3 9th hole. The back
9 was a real dream round for Julian with a birdie at hole 13 he only
dropped the one shot on the back 9 for a great score. Julian commented
by saying "Ive been in good form and its all down to Steve Astle
the local PGA Pro here at the course. Ive had a course of lessons and
its really paid off well".
Division 1 winner was Ian Needham of Uttoxeter in his first full season
at the club enjoyed a nett return of 65 off his 6 handicap. Birdies
on the front 9 at holes 3,4,5 and 8 gave him a 3 under gross score of
32, and coming home in 39 wrapped things up for Ian scoring a gross
par 71. Runner up was Swinscoe Lad Dave "Shooter" Bainbridge
