SUN  RATHER THAN THE GOLF SHINES IN THE BROOKER TROPHY !!

Lisa Gregory and Peter Cliffe                           Pat Richardson and Pete Sutton

Lisa Gregory and Peter Cliffe were as surprised as anyone to be the winners of the Mixed Foursomes Brooker Trophy on Saturday 2 July! Whether the sun had got to everyone is debatable, but it was a day which produced pretty mediocre performances all round, and in fact was the first time in recent years that the trophy has not been won with a score in the sixties.

Lisa and Peter finished with a net 72 just ahead on count back of Pat Richardson and Peter Sutton and in third place with a net 73 were Anne Weaver and Tony East

By their own admission Lisa and Peter had had a very ordinary round and it was Lisa who held the pair together, producing  a number of good recovery shots after her partner had put her in one or two awkward positions, not least in the holly bush at the side of the 4th green where her only option was to play out with her putter to score a pretty creditable 6 on the par 4 hole!

Nevertheless it was a glorious day and the competition was well supported and enjoyed by all. Afterwards the Brooker Trophy was presented to the winning couple by Lady Captain Jean Bissell

Murphy is Ace

The Lexus September Medal played for on Sunday 5th September will always be a very special day for Ashbourne Golf Club Member Martin Murphy who scored a hole in one on the third hole. A terrific roar was heard in the valley of Clifton village and beyond at around 7.55 on the morning of the competition as Martin drew back his trusted 5 iron and pitched the ball onto the front of the green and had a lovely hop forward over the small ridge on the green and gently hit the pin and sunk out of sight into the bottom of the hole. Martin commented after saying "the moment is still so surreal and I have to keep pinching myself to still believe it happened. It was an amazing feeling and I'm sure the whole of Clifton village heard my roar after holing out but its what us golfers often dream about doing and to achieve it is fantastic". Martin unfortunately could not get his round going after the feat blaming it on the euphoria of the moment!!. James Robinson of Derby fired a fine gross 71 off his 7 handicap to return a 7 under par score and saw his handicap reduced to 5. Birdies on holes 2, 10, 15 and 17 saw to his fine round and a place in Champion's Day secured.
