Underdogs Cause Upset in Quarter Finals
Aswell
as there being shocks in the FA Cup Quarter Finals played this weekend
there were also results of the same calibre in this season's Winter
League Quarter Finals played at Ashbourne Golf Club over the weekend.
All ties were played to time with many of the fancied pairs biting the
dust and thinking what could of been. Saturday's conditions were blustery
with showers at times but with the course looking very well after the
recent bad weather player's were in the position to make good scores.
First out was a preliminary match between Paul Barnett and James "Jimmy"
Bainbridge against Aiden Blake and Jim Robinson, and after a tight front
9 it was Paul and James holding the advantage by one hole. The back
9 was all about putting with Aiden and Jim making the first 2 holes
theirs, but Paul won the 13th with a par and James won 15 with a birdie
4 to give them the advantage in which the carried on to the 18th with
Paul making birdie to close the match with a better ball score of one
und er gross and set up the quarter final against Ken "Trigger"
Bainbridge and Roger Dear. The match was played after lunch and a very
close front 9 saw Paul and James take a one hole lead against the more
fancied Ken and Roger. A net birdie by Roger on the 10th hole brought
the match level but from here onwards the match turned with Paul having
a birdie on 12 and James wining holes 13 and 14 in the rain good enough
to take a 3 hole and winning lead with the match concluding on the 16th
to see the first shock win of the weekend. It was particulary sweet
for James getting one over on his dad. Second match out was Ashbourne's
Will Austin and Sean Fernihough another fancied pair against the Longford
duo of Andrew Dutton and Mike Taylor. Another close fought match which
saw the Longford pair always hold an advantage of one or two holes up
until the 15th when the match was all square. Not to be outdone though
the Longford lads won holes 16 and 17 to win the match 2 and 1 to cause
an other suprise. After playing out the last hole unfortunately for
Will his trolley decided to take off and to add insult to injury it
ended up in the 18th pond with Will having to wade in and rescue his
clubs, bag and trolley. Sunday's weather was far more calm with sunshine
and a little breeze the order of the day.
First out were heavily fancied brother's Mark and Adam Wild of Mickleover
coming up against Mick Beech and Dave Nash. Again another close match
saw it all square at the turn with nothing to choose between the two
pairs. It was Mick and Dave who took a slender lead after 16 by one
hole and when Adam could only muster a 6 on 17 then the match was all
over with Mick and Dave causing the upset. Final match out saw last
year's reigning champions from Ashbourne Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt
taking on Chris Carter and Steve Walwyn. This game started out very
close aswell with Ian and Steve matching each other after 4 holes with
Chris then stepping in to take the 5th hole with a bir die. Jim levelled
the match up with a par on 7 and then both Ian and Jim scored birdies
at 8 to take the advantage. Chris and Jim then holed fine par putts
on 9 to leave Ian and Jim 1 up at the turn. A par for Ian at 10 secured
the hole, Steve hit back for birdie on 11 but then Jim won 12 and 13
with par, birdie to take a 3 hole lead. Steve and Chris both missed
short putts on 14 and a birdie by Steve on 15 reduced the defecit to
2 but poor tee shots let the duo down on 16 and Jim hit a nett par for
the hole and victory which sees Ian and Jim into the semi final and
hot favourites to defend the Winter League Crown. The Semi Final Draw
sees Mick Beech and Dave Nash play Andrew Dutton and Mike Taylor, with
Paul Barnett and James Bainbridge against Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt.
The winter eclectic for 2008 was highly successful again. Dave Lowe
won Division 1 in front of Simon Lockwood and Ken McKeown, Division
2 was won by G Sinclair followed in by A Weild and Nigel Taylor. Divisio
n 3 was won by Bernie Brown Seniors Captain with A Gardner and Wally
Beeson taking the minor honours.
Members are reminded that the Easter 4 ball better ball takes place
on the 22nd and 23rd of March.

A
fabulous weekends weather combining cold and frosty starts with glorious
winter sunshine greeted the group of winter league pairs this weekend.

Longford Duo Stake Claim
Very
few of the big guns took part this weekend due to the fact that qualification
was already sewn up ready for the knockout draws to take place on the
21st Feb.
In fine conditions over the weekend only a select number of matches
were played with the most vital win coming for Andrew Dutton and Mike
Taylor who secured their place in the knockout stages with a fine win
over Nick Hamblin and Barry Ritchie winning by the one hole in a nervous
battle which sees the Longford pair move into 6th place with a 1.4 win
ratio. Mick and Gary Beech of Middleton by Wirksworth chalked up their
3rd win on the bounce in a hard fought match beating Ashbourne's Max
Lee and Paul Harrison by the one hole which sees them move into a qualifying
position in 7th place. Andy Robb and Paul Skeet of Derby battle on by
chalking up a fine win over Jim Sellors and Colin Walker but the duo
need to play twice in the next week and win to stand any chance of qualifying.
Mick Carter and Da mien Jefferys suffered another heavy defeat which
rules out any chance of qualifying beaten 4&3 by Nick Chadwick of
Ashbourne and Uttoxeter's Andy Nicholls. Last year's beaten finalists
Barry McCabe and Jason Blake beat Wirksworth's Rob Inglis and Craig
Murphy 3&1 and both teams really need to play twice and win twice
to stand any chance of qualifying. So with one weekend's play left until
the cut off mark of 20th February the last 2 places are still up for
grabs with a chance for John Mabbott and Alan Slater, Mick and Gary
Beech, Aiden Blake and James Robinson, Max Lee and Paul Harrison, Phil
Green and Stuart Knight, John Hitchcock and Paul Siddall, James Bainbridge
and Paul Barnett all still in contention which will come down to the
wire.
Swinscoe
Pair Continue Fine Run

Ken "Trigger" Bainbridge & Roger Dear - Another fine win
on Sunday
Ashbourne Lads - Sean Fernihough & Will Austin playing well

Chris Carter - had a tremendous round on Sunday
The
weather again at the weekend played havoc at Ashbourne Golf Club with
a dusting of overnight snow meaning the course was closed all day on
Saturday meaning many winter league pairs failed to play again. Sunday
though turned out to be ok with a rapid thaw seeing the snow melt and
the course reopen with a select group of matches being played.
The big clash of the weekend saw Swinscoe pair Ken "Trigger"
Bainbridge and Roger Dear continue their fine season with a one hole
win over Stuart Knight and Phil Green who have now lost 3 matches on
the trot and put their own qualification into doubt. Ken and Roger had
opened up a 3 hole advantage after 7 but then lost the next 2 and one
up is how it stayed until the last hole when Roger had a nett 4 to claim
the win. Roger said "Its been my first crack at winter league and
ive really enjoyed it although I do get a little nervous and Ken has
to see me through!". Qualification for the Swinscoe pair is now
in the bag along with Mickleover B rothers Mark and Adam Wild who had
another fine win over Paul Skeet and Tony Broadhurst who was standing
in for Andy Robb and Join them at the top of the table after a 4&3
win.
Sean Fernihough and Will Austin move into 4th place after going on a
fine run of form which has seen them win their last 5 matches and puts
the Ashbourne Lads most certainly into the last 8. Chris Carter and
Steve Walwyn got back to winning ways by beating Nick Chadwick and Andy
Nicholls 3&1 after last weeks defeat which moves them into 5th place
in the table. Chris did the back 9 in one under gross with some fantastic
chipping and putting, saying "A trip to the driving range in the
week has made all the difference and thats the best ive played this
winter season". Anthony Bates stood in for Alan Slater again partnering
John Mabbott to a fine win over Jim Sellors and Colin Walker with Bates
going round in 5 over gross. Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt stay in 3rd
place by gaining a point in a fine battle ag ainst Barry McCabe and
Jason Blake while Mick and Gary Beech handed out a firm beating to Mick
Carter and Damien Jefferys 5&4.
With just 2 weeks to go now the battle is on for the qualifiers with
the last 3 spaces still up for grabs. The new season at Ashbourne Golf
Club starts on March 1st and there wouldnt be a better time for anyone
wishing to take up membership to join and get the benefit of a full
season.
Anyone wishing to join would be most welcome by contacting Andrew Smith
the Golf Manager on 01335 347960.
The club and its members send its best wishes and a speedy recovery
to the club secretary John Hammond as on sunday morning he accidentally
had a nasty slip on the 8th fairway and paramedics had to be called
out after it was feared John may have broken his leg but it was thought
later in hospital he had ruptured his knee ligaments.

Weekend of 26th/27th January 2008
Many
members were chomping at the bit to get back out on the golf course
after last week's closure of the course due to the torrential rain seen
in the area. The course had dried out very well in the run up to this
weekend, and the drainage system put down in the summer of 2006 on holes
11,12 and 13 faced its sternest test to date standing up to the task
extremely well. Blustery conditions faced members at the weekend but
at least it was dry and there were also some interesting results as
the competition enters its last 3 weeks of play the final 8 qualifying
places are still up for grabs. A meeting of the match and handicap committee
on Tuesday night declared that due to the closure of the course winter
league pairs will now have to play a minimum of 9 matches instead of
10 to qualify.
The big clash of the weekend saw Ken Bainbridge and Roger back to winning
ways after a 2 week absence with a slender one hole win over John Hitchcock
and stand in sub Harry Dusanjh which saw them back in joint top position
with the Wild Brothers after the match ended all square against John
Brommage and Andrew Pearson. Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt moved into
3rd place with a beating of Stuart Knight and Phil Green who suffered
their 2nd straight defeat and leaves them in 8th position. Platt's fine
front 9 score of just 3 over gross set the pair on their way to a fine
win. Chris Carter and Steve Walwyn lost their unbeaten record after
they were soundly beaten by Father and Son combination of Mick and Gary
Beech 3 and 2 and Andrew Dutton and Mike Taylor also lost to Paul Barnett
and Jamie Bainbridge who also move into contention just outside of the
top 8.
Another pair to suffer a shock defeat were Craig Murphy and Rob Inglis
after John Mabbott birdied the last hole to sneak a win and put a dent
in the Wirksworth pairs top 8 hopes. Damien Jefferys salvaged a great
half for him and Mick Carter against Barnett and Bainbridge who were
one under gross for the roun d with a fine nett birdie also on the last
hole of which Damien put it down to his lucky green illuminous hat.
Sean Fernihough and Will Austin continued their fine run with their
4th straight win to take them into 4th place against Jim Sellors and
Colin Walker 3 and 2.

Results for Weekend of 12th/13th January 2008
Although Saturday
was a fine day with ample winter sunshine, unfortunately the heavy rain
on Friday followed by a sharp frost in the early hours put paid to any
play being possible on Saturday with the course having to close through
waterlogging. This caught many members out unaware, turning up for play
only to be disappointed. The winter league matches for Saturday were
therefore lost leaving not much chance to reschedule for Sunday. However
onto Sunday and after rain in the early evening of Saturday again put
doubt into Sunday's play, the rain let up before midnight and the course
had dried out enough to allow play.
A select group of matches were tested by the strong wind and sporadic
showers but no matches were halved. Top clash on Sunday saw Chris Carter
and Steve Walwyn defeat pacesetters Phil Green and Stuart Knight and
keep in tact their unbeaten record by winning 2 & 1. A close fought
battle turned after hole 13 when both Green and Knight missed 4 foot
putt s to win the hole and then saw Walwyn sink a 15 footer on 14 and
birdie on 15 to take control and move the pair into joint 3rd in the
table. Mark and Adam Wild of Mickleover now take the lead at the top
of the table with a fine win over Mick and Gary Beech 3 & 2 and
the pairs gross score stood at 3 under for the round. Local Lads Sean
Fernihough and Will Austin carried on their good form by taking another
big scalp by seeing off last years runners up Barry McCabe and Jason
Blake 2 & 1 after being 3 up at the turn and now see themselves
in the qualifying positions after winning their last 3 matches and nudging
the losers out of the top 8 positions.
Another in form pair in the form of Wirksworths Craig Murphy and Rob
Inglis also step into the top 8 after beating early winter league leaders
John Hitchcock and Paul Siddall 2 & 1 with Murphy coming into some
good form at the right time. Andy Robb and Paul Skeet earned their second
win of the campaign over Ray Keen an d Stuart Hoad, with scratch team
player's Jamie Bainbridge and Paul Barnett finding a good win over A

Winter
League Results for January 5th/6th 2008
The
first round of winter league matches to take place in the new year brought
some hefty defeats for some pairs and some great battles in other matches.
A fine weekend of weather saw some good golf being played with big movers
from the weekend being Sean Fernihough and Will Austin who recorded 2
victories over the weekend taking the scalp of Robb and Skeet by winning
on the last hole thanks to a birdie from Fernihough, and then giving a
good hiding to Setford and Hobson by 5&4 on Sunday. The big clash
of the weekend between Andrew Dutton & MikeTaylor and Chris Carter
& Steve Walwyn ended all square after a fine tussle. Never behind
in the game and still unbeaten Carter & Walwyn missed the opportunity
to record a 4th win after throwing away a 2 hole advantage after 14. Ian
Atterbury & Jim Platt won again against Mick Carter & Damo Jefferies
by 2&1 but with Harry Dusanjh a last minute sub for Atterbury who
fractured his ankle bone footballing on for Ashbourne United on Saturday.
Mark & Adam Wild retain their place at the top with a fine 2&1
win over Blake and Robinson, with Phil Green & Stuart Knight keeping
them company at the top with a thrashing of P & B Bembridge 5&4.
Murphy & Inglis now stalk the leaders with a convincing thrashing
of Hamblin & Ritchie 6&5. Ken Bainbridge & Roger Dear continue
their fine progress with another win along with last year's runners up
Jason Blake and Barry McCabe but John Hitchcock and Paul Siddall have
started to come undone a little and managed a draw against Bromage and
Pearson. Plenty of golf still to be played with only the top 8 qualifying
there are sure to be more twists and turns yet before the February 20th
cut off point.

The better day of
the weekend was Sunday enjoying a fine and mild day. Saturday started
out fine but rain in the afternoon affected the late starters. Headlines
of the weekend was the news that the leaders John Hitchcock and Paul
Siddall have lost their first game to Max Lee and Paul Harrison who
defeated them 4&3. They also lost their lead at the top of the league
to 2 pairs who didnt play at the weekend in the form of Mark & Adam
Wild and Phil Green & Stuart Knight who share the lead on a 1.6%
ratio. The only unbeaten pair now are Chris Carter & Steve Walwyn
who scrambled another draw against Craig Murphy & R Inglis (sub)
and lie on a 1.5%. Big movers of the weekend were Andrew Dutton &
Mike Taylor whose one hole victory against Julian Setford and Neil Hobson
puts them in a strong position on 1.57%as they aim to qualify yet again,
and a match against Walwyn & Carter next weekend looks sure to be
a go od game. A good win for the holders Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt
also moves them upto the 1.4% mark and into a menacing position.

Weather conditions yet again brought
havoc to the fairways this time caused by thick fog over Ashbourne all
weekend with visibility on some holes down to 30 yards. Saturday afternoon
was the only time it cleared mainly due to an outburst of rain. Now
at the halfway stage with the final weekend set for Sunday 20th February
most pairs should have been looking to have played around 5 matches
by now with 10 matches the minimum qualifying mark. Some interesting
results this weekend saw Ken Bainbridge and Roger Dear taste defeat
for the first time by one hole to Bernie and Phil Bainbridge. This allowed
Paul Siddall and John Hitchcock to take over top spot with a thrashing
of 6&4 over Jim Sellors and Colin Walker. Mark and Adam Wild beat
last years champs Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt and Andrew Dutton and
Mike Taylor now have 4 wins after beating Max Lee and Paul Harrison.

This
weekend turned out to be dry weather wise after a couple of wet weeks
but was very cold with the biting easterly breeze meaning temperatures
struggled to get above 3 degrees celcius. Although the course has managed
to recover from all the rain of recent weeks, the frost has certainly
got into the ground with the greens remaining frozen all weekend playing
havoc with player's balls, who thought they had played the perfect chip
shop only to find the ball pinging off the green's and shooting sometimes
30 yards through. The big black crow near to the middle of the 8th fairway
has again been causing chaos with several member's reporting seeing
the crow taking balls off the fairway and into the adjoining field on
the left hand side. Member's are reminded a free drop can only be taken
if the crow is seen taking the ball!! As the halfway stage of the season
approaches the league table is starting to take shape with P Siddall
and J Hitchcock leading the way still with K Bainbridge and R Dear joining
them for the top place. P Green and S Knight continue their good form
with Mark and Adam Wild, Steve Walwyn and Chris Carter, Aiden Blake
and Jim Robinson among the early front runners with still a lot of golf
still to be played.

After the Fur n
Feather competition the weekend before, Winter League resumed this weekend
but only for the die hards who braved the elements on Saturday as the
heavy rain submerged the course. The rain which also affected Sunday's
play in the fur n feather the weekend before returned with avengence
on Saturday and the heavens opened in dramatic fashion as relentless
rain fell on Ashbourne. A grand total of 3 matches were played on Saturday
and they were very brave souls. A couple of matches were also recorded
from the previous weekend and are listed below. New leaders of Winter
League 2007/08 at this early stage are Clifton's Paul Siddall and Mayfield's
John Hitchcock with a great record of having played 4 and won 4.

Another weekend of mixed
weather with Sunday being the better of the two with Saturday being

losing their winning run was Phil Green and Stuart Knight after being
beaten by Nick Hamblin and Barrie Ritchie. Last years winners Ian Atterbury
