Golf Club's Matchplay Winter League Quarter Final Knockout Matches have
now been completed not without a couple of suprises on the way, but
with some excellent golf played on the course which has been complemented
on its superior condition for the current time of the year. James Bainbridge
and Paul Barnett were the first couple to make it through to the semi
finals with a fine 4 & 2 win over Mickleover Brother's Mark and
Adam Wild. Ken Payne Ashbourne Golf Club unfortunately has to announce the sad news that long standing greenkeeper Ken Payne (pictured below) passed away on Saturday 21st February 2009. Ken's funeral will take place on Wednesday 4th March, 1.15pm at Clifton Church.

Hancock & Robb Scrape Final Place Ashbourne Golf Club's Winter League Matchplay Competition is now entering the Quarter Final Knockout Stages after qualifying finished on Sunday. With the covering of snow in early February the competition was extended by a week to allow members extra time to play the allotted 10 qualifying games. The top 6 places were virtually assured by the weekend with some solid golf being played through the winter months by Paul Barnett and James Bainbridge, Aiden Blake and James Robinson, Paul Harrison and Max Lee, Mike Taylor and Andrew Dutton, Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt and Leon Lewis and John Taylor. The final two qualifying places were up for grabs and the openness of this years competition meant any 6 couples could of qualified over the last 2 weeks of the competition. John Mabbott and Mick Beech were the biggest losers having one foot in the door only to lose their last 3 matches on the trot and narrowly miss out. Their last match on Sunday saw them play Andy Robb and Rob Hancock which boiled down into a shoot t and whichever team won made it through to the quarter finals. Andy and Rob took the match 2 and 1 to seal their place. Sean Fernihough and Will Austin were beaten by Aiden Blake and James Robinson to end their hopes. Roger Dear and Tony Kemish ended Mick Carter and Steve Walwyn's faint hopes with a 3 and 1 victory and John Hitchcock and Paul Siddall's late surge was ended by Mike Taylor and Andrew Dutton. Adam and Mark Wild who had near enough given up on qualifying made it in through the back door to claim a place due to other results going in their favour after a hard fought half against Max Lee and Paul Robinson gave them a qualifying mark of 0.91%. The draw for the quarter final knockout stage will be made this week and the club would like to see all matches played as soon as possible. Members are also reminded the annual subscriptions for the 2009 season are now due.

The first day of
the new year also brought a new Captain to Ashbourne Golf Club for the
year of 2009 in the form of Ashbourne Man, Bob Carter. As the midday
chimes of St Oswalds Church rung out over Ashburnia, the next sound
was the roar of Bob arriving James Bond Style in a BMW Z3, chauffeur
driven by his eldest son Michael to the tune of "Goldfinger"
to a delighted crowd who clapped Bob in. Dressed as James Bond in Black
Tie Style, Bob then walked upon the tee to receive a dry martini shaken
but not stirred off Miss Moneypenny aka Miss Emily Smith of Brailsford.
Bob raised his glass to the crowd, wished them a happy new year and
then proceeded to take off his Jacket and hit the first ball of his
Captaincy off the first tee straight down the middle of the fairway
to an ecstatic applause. Bob has been a member since 1991 at Ashbourne
Golf Club, plays off a 13 handicap and for the last 2 years has been
match and handicap secretary. Residing in Ashbourne for the last 20
years and also married fr 40 years to wife Dorothy, they have 3 children
Alison, Michael and Chris with the lads both being members of Ashbourne
Golf Club. Bob was Engineering Manager at the Nestle plant in Ashbourne
until taking early retirement in 2000. Now kept busy at the Golf Club
and by his 3 granddaughters Bob said afterwards "I'm really looking
forward to the year and taking the club forward and its also extra special
as the Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary where many events are
planned for the year".

recent cold snap has made for some interesting conditions at Ashbourne
Golf Club with frozen greens making the sport more like ping pong than
golf. The last 2 weeks has seen some true to form results with the big
guns that are expected to make the finals line up at the end of February
start to make their moves. Ashbourne's Max Lee and Paul Harrison had
a tough match against Graham Harbey and Alex White which ended in a
draw but then followed that up with a fine win against Julian Setford
and Neil Hobson to move them up the league. Sean Fernihough and Will
Austin consolidated their place at the top of the league with a battling
win against Mick Carter and Steve Walwyn by winning 1 up. Leon Lewis
and John Taylor have also strengthed their claims with two wins in the
last 2 weeks. A win over Trevor McCabe and Chris Sothers was followed
up with a fine win over Mark and Adam Wild who have suffered two reverses
in the last 2 weeks, with John Mabbott and Mick Beech beating the pair
3 and 2 on Sunday. Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt only playing their second
match of the league recorded their second win by winning against Steve
Walwyn and sub Gavin Ratcliffe winning by a massive 8 and 7 to all but
end their campaign. Paul Barnett and James Bainbridge continue their
fine start by beating Trevor McCabe and Chris Sothers 2 and 1 in the
frosty conditions. Ian

Golf Club's Winter League Competition continues at the Wyaston Road
Club with matches being played on the Saturday of this weekend but unfortunately
all of Sunday's matches fell victim to the weather with the course deemed
unplayable until noon due to the early mornings light snow fall. Early
leaders of the competition in the form of Ashbourne pair Will Austin
and Sean Fernihough made the most of playing on the Saturday by beating
Clifton's Paul Siddall and Mayfield's John Hitchcock by 3 and 1. Will
said after "The game was a bit scrappy really with quite a few
up and downs being made and I dont think either pairings played to our
full ability, but we've gained another win and hopefully we can continue
our run". The victory saw Will and Sean having played 4 and won
3 of them so far to put them top of the table. Derby Duo Neil Hobson
and Julian Setford gained their first win of the competition in fine
style at the expense of Andrew Dutton and his subsitute by 5 and 4.
