Winter League Semi Final Line Up Complete

Ashbourne Golf Club's Matchplay Winter League Quarter Final Knockout Matches have now been completed not without a couple of suprises on the way, but with some excellent golf played on the course which has been complemented on its superior condition for the current time of the year. James Bainbridge and Paul Barnett were the first couple to make it through to the semi finals with a fine 4 & 2 win over Mickleover Brother's Mark and Adam Wild.

James was recovering after scaling Ben Nevis the previous week and Paul on pins with the imminent birth of his first child turned the screw after the turn by winning holes 10,11 and 12 to give them breathing space and shake hands on a comfortable win on the 16th hole. James said after "Barney and Me have played pretty solid all winter and its pleasing to make the semis. Im just getting over the exertions of last weekend but fortunately we had Matt "Maddog" Bullock with us up Ben Nevis which kept us highly entertained on the way up to the peak!".

A repeat of last year's final saw the result go the same way with Longford Duo Andrew Dutton and Mike Taylor seeing off Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt in a fine battle. With Ian and Jim leading 2 up after 7 holes and seemingly on their way to a semi final spot, a fight back on the back 9 by Andrew and Mike saw the match all square on the 18th tee, with Andrew and Mike winning the last and taking victory. Leon Lewis and John Taylor had a fine win over Paul Harrison and Max Lee winning 4 & 2 with Scratch Team Captain saying "Weve had a good season which suffered a blip around half way through around Christmas time but John's had a fine few weeks of late and its very pleasing to get into the semis".

The final quarter final was one heck of a match which had to be decided by sudden death on the 20th hole. The much fancied pairing of Aiden Blake and James Robinson held a 2 hole lead after 16 holes against Andy Robb and Robb Hancock only to go and lose the last 2 holes sending it to sudden death. The 19th was tied but Robb and Andy sec ured the win on the 20th hole to take the match and move into the semi finals after a thrilling match. James Bainbridge and Paul Barnett will play Leon Lewis and John Taylor with Robb Hancock and Andy Robb to face Andrew Dutton and Mike Taylor in the semi finals. The Texas Scramble Competition is being held over Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of March for teams of 3 and 4 before the new competition season starts in earnest on Saturday 28th March with the March Medal being competed for.

Hancock & Robb Scrape Final Place

Ashbourne Golf Club's Winter League Matchplay Competition is now entering the Quarter Final Knockout Stages after qualifying finished on Sunday. With the covering of snow in early February the competition was extended by a week to allow members extra time to play the allotted 10 qualifying games.

The top 6 places were virtually assured by the weekend with some solid golf being played through the winter months by Paul Barnett and James Bainbridge, Aiden Blake and James Robinson, Paul Harrison and Max Lee, Mike Taylor and Andrew Dutton, Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt and Leon Lewis and John Taylor. The final two qualifying places were up for grabs and the openness of this years competition meant any 6 couples could of qualified over the last 2 weeks of the competition. John Mabbott and Mick Beech were the biggest losers having one foot in the door only to lose their last 3 matches on the trot and narrowly miss out. Their last match on Sunday saw them play Andy Robb and Rob Hancock which boiled down into a shoot t and whichever team won made it through to the quarter finals. Andy and Rob took the match 2 and 1 to seal their place.

Sean Fernihough and Will Austin were beaten by Aiden Blake and James Robinson to end their hopes. Roger Dear and Tony Kemish ended Mick Carter and Steve Walwyn's faint hopes with a 3 and 1 victory and John Hitchcock and Paul Siddall's late surge was ended by Mike Taylor and Andrew Dutton. Adam and Mark Wild who had near enough given up on qualifying made it in through the back door to claim a place due to other results going in their favour after a hard fought half against Max Lee and Paul Robinson gave them a qualifying mark of 0.91%.

The draw for the quarter final knockout stage will be made this week and the club would like to see all matches played as soon as possible. Members are also reminded the annual subscriptions for the 2009 season are now due.

Captain Bob Drives In Bond Style

The first day of the new year also brought a new Captain to Ashbourne Golf Club for the year of 2009 in the form of Ashbourne Man, Bob Carter. As the midday chimes of St Oswalds Church rung out over Ashburnia, the next sound was the roar of Bob arriving James Bond Style in a BMW Z3, chauffeur driven by his eldest son Michael to the tune of "Goldfinger" to a delighted crowd who clapped Bob in. Dressed as James Bond in Black Tie Style, Bob then walked upon the tee to receive a dry martini shaken but not stirred off Miss Moneypenny aka Miss Emily Smith of Brailsford. Bob raised his glass to the crowd, wished them a happy new year and then proceeded to take off his Jacket and hit the first ball of his Captaincy off the first tee straight down the middle of the fairway to an ecstatic applause. Bob has been a member since 1991 at Ashbourne Golf Club, plays off a 13 handicap and for the last 2 years has been match and handicap secretary. Residing in Ashbourne for the last 20 years and also married fr 40 years to wife Dorothy, they have 3 children Alison, Michael and Chris with the lads both being members of Ashbourne Golf Club. Bob was Engineering Manager at the Nestle plant in Ashbourne until taking early retirement in 2000. Now kept busy at the Golf Club and by his 3 granddaughters Bob said afterwards "I'm really looking forward to the year and taking the club forward and its also extra special as the Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary where many events are planned for the year".

Ladies Captain for 2009 is Sally Benn from Newcastle Under Lyme. Ashbourne is in Sally's blood though as she was born in Derbyshire and her first Job in teaching was at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School where most people will remember Sally aswell for her hockey playing days at Ashbourne Hockey Club. Now teaching in Staffordshire Sally's life has been dedicated to sport where she is also Junior Organiser at Ashbourne Golf Club. A staunch Nottingham Forest supporter Sally also has a keen interest in o oking and also her black labrador dog Ellie and plays off a handicap of 15 which she is determind to reduce in her year of office.

Seniors Captain for 2009 is local man Roger Dear who has lived in Swinscoe for 26 years and plays off a handicap of 25. Roger has been a member for nearly 4 years at Ashbourne Golf Club and has been retired for 6 and a half years from Raleigh Bicycles. Married for 38 years Roger has a son and daughter and is also a keen cyclist. Roger is looking forward to the year and the 10th anniversary celebrations in which he read on the Internet that "2009 according to climate scientists, is set to be one of the five warmest years on record" and Roger says that can only mean more golfing days! Junior Captain for 2009 is Tom Winbow of the Greenway, Ashbourne. Tom who plays off a 18 handicap is currently in the sixth form at Qegs studying business studies, while also working part time at the Bowling Green Inn. Tom's ambition is to be an Entrepreneur and is also looking forward to tryingto get his handicap down to single figures in the next 2 years.

Big Guns Climb Table

The recent cold snap has made for some interesting conditions at Ashbourne Golf Club with frozen greens making the sport more like ping pong than golf. The last 2 weeks has seen some true to form results with the big guns that are expected to make the finals line up at the end of February start to make their moves. Ashbourne's Max Lee and Paul Harrison had a tough match against Graham Harbey and Alex White which ended in a draw but then followed that up with a fine win against Julian Setford and Neil Hobson to move them up the league. Sean Fernihough and Will Austin consolidated their place at the top of the league with a battling win against Mick Carter and Steve Walwyn by winning 1 up. Leon Lewis and John Taylor have also strengthed their claims with two wins in the last 2 weeks. A win over Trevor McCabe and Chris Sothers was followed up with a fine win over Mark and Adam Wild who have suffered two reverses in the last 2 weeks, with John Mabbott and Mick Beech beating the pair 3 and 2 on Sunday. Ian Atterbury and Jim Platt only playing their second match of the league recorded their second win by winning against Steve Walwyn and sub Gavin Ratcliffe winning by a massive 8 and 7 to all but end their campaign. Paul Barnett and James Bainbridge continue their fine start by beating Trevor McCabe and Chris Sothers 2 and 1 in the frosty conditions.

Ian Atterbury & Jim Platt (right)

This Sunday saw them record a creditable half after coming back from 3 down against Paul Siddall and John Hitchcock. Neil Hobson and Julian Setford got their challenge back on track with a victory over Andy Robb and Rob Hancock and Aiden Blake and James Robinson are going along well after beating Graham Harbey and Alex White on Sunday. The AGM was well attended in midweek at the Clubhouse with Bob Carter voted in for Captain 2009 who will be assisted by his Vice Captain for the year in the form of Tony East.

The Golf Club would like to pass on their thanks to all who supported the Tombola Stall held at late night shopping and a massive thanks to John Harrison of Acorn Country Gifts for his help on the evening in providing illumination and refreshments for the members on the stall.

Ashbourne Golf Club currently has a winter warmer package available that offers 18 holes of golf in the week for £20 and weekends for £25.

The Wyaston Road Club is holding a New Year's Eve Party in the Clubhouse, tickets are priced £20 and include entertainment from Ivan Ball's Big Band, a buffet and limited transport from Ashbourne town centre.

Tickets are available from Nigel's Butchers or the Golf Club on 01335 342078 for over 18's only and all are welcome.

Third Win For Will & Sean

Ashbourne Golf Club's Winter League Competition continues at the Wyaston Road Club with matches being played on the Saturday of this weekend but unfortunately all of Sunday's matches fell victim to the weather with the course deemed unplayable until noon due to the early mornings light snow fall. Early leaders of the competition in the form of Ashbourne pair Will Austin and Sean Fernihough made the most of playing on the Saturday by beating Clifton's Paul Siddall and Mayfield's John Hitchcock by 3 and 1. Will said after "The game was a bit scrappy really with quite a few up and downs being made and I dont think either pairings played to our full ability, but we've gained another win and hopefully we can continue our run". The victory saw Will and Sean having played 4 and won 3 of them so far to put them top of the table. Derby Duo Neil Hobson and Julian Setford gained their first win of the competition in fine style at the expense of Andrew Dutton and his subsitute by 5 and 4.

The Derby pair were 1 up after 9 holes and then turned the screw by winning the next 4 holes to put the result beyond doubt. Lister Cumming and Club President Tony Broadhurst also got their first win under their belts with a one hole win over Derby's John Brommage and Andy Pearson. Lister and Tony lost the first 2 holes before turning the match around and winning by the narrowest of margins. Other results on Saturday saw Rob Hancock and Andy Robb beat Stuart Hoad and Ray Keen, while two pairs playing their first match in the form of Paul Harrison and Max Lee overcame Tony Kemish and Senior Vice Captain Roger Dear. On a lighter note Ashbourne Golf Club's Captain from 2007 Steve Bryan would like to issue a thankyou to the many members of the Golf Club who have not seen him for a couple of weeks and were concerned about his welfare. Steve would like to say that he is fine and the rumours about him actually appearing on the ITV show "Im a celebrity get me out of here!" are not true, In fact Steve would Jut like to confirm that it is actually Robert Kilroy Silk that is in the Jungle and not him!! This Weekend sees the Fur And Feather Competition take place over Saturday and Sunday where members will have the chance to win a Turkey for Christmas along with other assorted meats and savouries.
