On Sunday 22nd May, Ashbourne Golf Club hosted two of Derbyshire Golf’s County competitions, The Drabble and Sayers Cups. The Drabble Cup is for teams of four, with each player playing as an individual, the best three medal scores counting towards the team total. The Sayers Cup is played for concurrently and is an individual competition specifically for the Captains of Derbyshire Golf Clubs.
Ashbourne entered four teams in the Drabble Cup and they competed against teams from eleven other Derbyshire Golf Clubs. In total, 99 players participated in the event.
The day culminated in a resounding success for Ashbourne Golf Club in both events. The Drabble Cup was won by the team of Barrie Ritchie (nett 68), Nick Hamblin (nett 69), Adam Randall (nett 71), with Peter Bembridge the fourth member of the team. It was an excellent all round team performance.
Ashbourne also claimed third place in the team event with the Beech Boys (Gary and Mick), Peter Lucas (a recent addition to the club) and Ian Ward making up the team.
In the individual nett scores Ashbourne occupied 4 of the top ten places - Barrie Ritchie in 2nd on countback, Gary Beech in 3rd on countback, Nick Hamblin in 4th and Adam Randall 9th.
This is the first time in over 50 years that the Drabble Cup has resided in the Ashbourne Trophy cabinet.
Ten Derbyshire Club Captain's competed in The Sayers Cup and the winner was Ashbourne Captain, Barrie Ritchie, who picked up his second winner's trophy of the day.
